could be huge number of things! pending on the problem its a bit drastic that you would have to scrap the car tbh! if it failed on emiisions its most probs either certain sensors not workin eg lmbda sensor cts sensor etc mixture running to rich or to lean, a faulty catylitic converter,
does the car have an induction kit on it if so you will have to put the standard induction system on as the induction kit messes the emissions up!!

its totally standard and i put a new cat on last month, the mechanic said that it smokes blue smoke because the something stems in the engine are worn and the engine needs rebuilding

ohh right thats a different story then it still doesnt need to be scrapped at all lol thats very drmatic!! just get a mechanic to take the cylinder head off and change the valve stem oil seals shouldnt cost much for the seals and labour all the seals do is stop oil from the head seaping into the comustion chambers causing the blue smoke you are getting,

but they shouldnt cost much to buy nd most mechanics will do the job for not to much.

Blue smoke will be the valve stem seals. The old blacktop vtr engines need them doing around 100k, it's a normal part of maintenance of the 8v engine.

doubt it will be valve stem seals on tick over, normally when on backing off at higher revs the valve stem seals smoke.

where are you from?

Could be on tickover marc, the valve stem seals leak most oil when there is high vacuum in the inlet manifold, which is at closed throttle, at any revs. Obviously the higher the revs the more it will leak but it's not abnormal for crap stem seals to leak at idle.

cheaper to get a lower mileage blacktop enigne and put that in I would have thought to rebuild your current one?

im in northampton, and my engine has done 116k
i was told today it needs rebuilding but unsure of costs dont know if getting a lower milage engine and get sum1 to fit it but then again unsure how much sum1 would charge me to fit a new engine

you can probs get a mk1 blacktop with low mileage for about 70 pounds or so have a look on ebay and pistonheads!

i had a little check for you for some prices on valve stem oil seals there is a link here to a website, the parts you need are part number 4001767 95619 you will need 8 of them as it is a 8valve engine, they will only cost you £11.76

vick were about you from? I would replace the enigne by the time you have taken head off got it skimmed valve stems done etc etc done by garage will cost alot more than just dropping a new engine in

that ok no worries ;)

if i was you i would jus change the oil seals any decent mechanic can do it for a reasonable price and shouldnt take more than a couple of hours and seen as the timing belt has to come of to do this and your engine has high mileage you might aswell change this at the same time for safetys sake,

the engine is an option but it will take a couple of days possibly and a lot more in labour to fit it its not a hard job jus very time consuming and thats what will cost the money!

no way, alot easier to drop a new lump in then fuck on wiv doing the seals, and a lower mileage engine should be healthier then the original

yeah but mate shes not just gunna drop it in herself is she so your gunna have to pay for some one to do it buy the time you have found someone found an engine fitted it all, you could of easily changed the valve stem seals its not that bloody hard i could do it under 2 hours no worries!

ah yes but then you have to factor in new headgasket, headbolts, head skim, new seals etc would cost more than a new engine for a garage to do old out new in local near me 3hrs

Going back to the original post, the mechanic may have been saying the valve stems are worn (ie the guides). To sort the head properly then is going to be 100's and probably far more than a good second hand engine. If you're lucky enough to know a decent mechanic, supplied from a scrap yard they trust. See what sort of guarantee you can get with such an installation, remember it's going to take a good mechanic just as long to install whether its any good or not. Maybe someone can recommend a breakers that will also install.........? New clutch would be prudent too as easy to fit while engine is out

What if it isnt the oil seals and worn pistons.....you could spend a small fortune and still have the original problem. It is a risk!

Replace the engine but make sure it is a good engine.

If your local garage have said there is a good possibility of it being the oil seals then i would go for the seals replaced.

Maybe someone on this site who lives local to you may fancy the job!....you never know.
