View Full Version : Good news my ECU has malfunctioned

MIL light came up on the saxo and just assumed it was the usual ECU spazzing shenanigans about the decat... but anyway decided to check it today just to be safe... glad I did
Got a P0606 fault - which means the ECU isn't a happy chappy...
now... the car runs fine, mpg is still good...
Any ideas what might have caused the ECU to go into a permanent girly state of monthly blob mode?
Should I just reset it and see if it pops up again or start looking for a replacement ECU - now if I go for a replacement ECU... can I just get a 3-plug VTS ECU and just lob it in, what's all this stuff about unlocking it?

if your ecu is rogered why not just give it to andy for the plug? before buying another 3plugger etc...
Unlocked ecus need to be unlocked on car or one of these companies who charge about £100 to do it.
We unlocked an ecu on an engine I bought last year.

yaaaar the plan it always to have standard parts in case I sell up or whatever... so I'd have to get a replacement if it's totally rogered (or at least constantly thinks it's rogered). Either way I can't really have the car ECU-less whilst I send of the plugs and wait for the Predator to materialise.
If the new one as obtained then the old one would be sent to Andy.
how is the unlock done... something about having the ignition on and then removing the ecu?
engine running, remove the immob box under the dash
Either that or you need the locked ecu, immob box + ring off the ignition barrel from memory
could you not drive down to andys with the car, remove the ecu + plug fit it to the predator motherboard that day?

else a locked ecu is specific to one car? i.e. will not run on someone elses VTS/GTi?
ja locked is locked, wont work.
Needs to be unlocked or have the immob box/transponder etc...

got ya... right time to reset the ECU first and see if it appears again :ponder:
Reset but dont let people know you need an ecu desperate else the price goes up up and away :P
LOL. That's not rogered. I've got P0606 stuck on mine 24/7. Apparently it means ECM/PCM processor malfunction. Basically, I got this right after Wayne mapped my car. I've had it reset loads of times, always comes back on...
What did Andy do to your ECU? :detective:
Never caused me any issues BTW...

now that's interesting... funnily enough I was wondering if the same error would occur after a remap... basically it's like an integrity check, so it compares a hard backup of the ECU to the operating (live) one, if some parameter differs from a 'hard version' then it goes and spazzes.
Now because the car runs ok, I'm reluctant reset the ECU in case the fault is then written to the live one.
this is all made up in my head but its the best answer I can give myself as to why it's gone poop. Andy didn't touch it man, it was just an idea to send the ECU to him to rip the connector off and pop it on a predator
cheers for the reassurance :y:
You can clear the DTC, but it will most likely come back. But worth a try... You will need a special device to clear this though, just a reset won't to jack. Either way, I wouldn't stress too much, as it hasn't caused me any issues. When it first came on at Wayne's, he checked the mapping, and said that whatever it is, it hasn't affected the map.

yar I can clear DTC's... bummer... I'm going to leave it until the car is back at sayer towers anyway... just in case
Just clear it see if it comes back. Simples. :)

Sup sayer. I have a 3 plug unlocked vtr ecu running on mine now. Seems just fine. Throw BlueHawk a call, they do unlocks for £80 I think.
Up in Nottingham near me.
Like Toad said ... Just clear it and see if it occurs again. I've got a feeling it will ...
