View Full Version : VTS into VTR

Aswell as breaking my VTS for spares I've been wondering how easy it would be to fit the VTS setup into my daily VTR?

I've done a search and gathered a load of info about ECU's, clocks etc but just wanted to ask a specific question on my car.

The VTS is a 98 mk1 single plug. The VTR a 99 mk2 single plug. Is it just a case of plug and play? Can I hook one loom up to the other in the engine bay, or is splicing required?

I've found if I change the ECU, I'll have to change the ignition key etc too, is that as straightforward as it seems?

Basically I can do pretty much anything mechanical, its the electrics that will get me! My VTS is a complete car so I can take anything and everything I need to do the job.

Normally I'd not bother and get a VTS, but we've had this VTR 6 years and I know the car is sound underneath, and the mechanics of my 98 breaker are so good I'm a bit begrudged to get rid of it all!

Any thoughts? I've done one 8v 1400 > 1600 conversion before on a 106 (very easy!) but 8v to 16v is totally new to me!

Can't believe I missed that!

Any one know if the standard dials will still function right? The VTR only has 4 gauges not 5 and the redline cuts in earlier? Will it just carry on working and bury the needle into the redline?

i have the exact loom with unlucked ecu that you need, £130 and its yours

I've just worked out that I can unlock the VTS ECU I have as I still have the running car, so can do the uplug-start car trick. I'll unlock the VTR one before removing it too.

But once the loom and ECU is all wired in, how does that affect the dials and gauges on the VTR? Obviously it's got no oil gauge....would the wiring for that just blank off at the loom connection?

Basically I'd like to keep the original dials. I can live without the oil gauge no problem, just wanted to check if one will work with the other, being that the VTS has another gauge and a different face on the rev counter. Guessing its all the same behind the scenes?

it should all work but it might not just plug straight in, theres 2 differnet single plug looms and theres a chance the vtr has a differnet connector than the vts loom.
to unlock it turn the car on (vts) while its running go under the dash on the passenger side and find the immobiliser box, remove that and turn the car off and on again. make sure you do the same to the vtr (if you're going to sel the ecu on, if not just remove the immobiliser box)

Cheers. Where are these connectors situated? I might have a look first to see what I'm up against. I guess it's splicing time if the plugs are different?

theyre in front of the battery, on the inner passneger wing.
follow the loom from the engine until you find the multiplug.
if the vtr has the bigger plug and the S loom is smaller then ive got the right loom like i said, i'd sell it without the ecu

Ah right no I think they're both the same luckily!

Does anyone know if the trip counter on the clocks in controlled by the clocks themselves? The Mk1 has an analog setup, the mk2 is digital. I'm guessing the wiring to the clocks should be the same and the rest happens on the clocks themselves. Hoping I'm not wrong!

Any ideas?

Managed to get a pic of the connectors for the loom....look the same except one pin missing? Oil temp sender perhaps?

looks like it should be pretty straight forward. im just unsure on the difference between how analogue and digital clocks work
