View Full Version : Are these meant to lift oversteer badly?
WestCoastJosh
12th July 2009, 08:52
Went round a corner slightly faster than i should have been going, it was tighter than it looked and it started to understeer badly, i came off the throttle and the back end really swung round, i just missed a tree and just ended up badly kerbing my wheel. is that meant to happen?? thought they handled well, didnt expect that much understeer, shat myself. Its been lowered 40mm and has my mates gas shocks all round to
Mr_P
12th July 2009, 08:59
By that much understeer, you mean you were driving too quick for the conditions and the car was incapable of making it around the corner at silly speeds?
And yes if you're on the limit and decide to lift off your arse is going to try to overtake you.
WestCoastJosh
12th July 2009, 09:01
Na i mean the bend really didnt look to bad, was doin 35-40. it wasnt raining but had been earlier, so was damp. got good tires tho, federals. there wasnt much else i could have done tbh.
Rob-6
12th July 2009, 09:04
federals are cheap tyres arnt they?
WestCoastJosh
12th July 2009, 09:06
i have heard only good things about them, were on the wheels when i got them. suppose i meant they have good tread... lol
Rob-6
12th July 2009, 09:09
dont think it matters what suspension/tyres you have, im running billies and yoko tyres and if i lift of round a corner the arse end of the car try's to overtake

lift off oversteer
WestCoastJosh
12th July 2009, 09:12
Just didnt expect it to be that bad. always thought it handled really well till that day. probably gonna spend a bit more money to tighten it up a bit.

They do hande well, if you don't lift off on corners.
WestCoastJosh
12th July 2009, 09:21
i know mate, not much i could have done. if i carried on i would have hit the tree that i barely missed when i lifted off.
just really didnt expect it to understeer that badly.

just trust the car to go round usually will even if you get a bit of understeer its usually controlable, i've had the ass kick out a few times when i've had to brake on a corner usually due to some tit pulling out infront of me or small furry bunnys lol!
Decent tyres help loads, my cars always handled well even as standard with a decent set of Eagle f1 tyres.

well it was more damp than wet, sun had dried most out.

It wasnt a bit though mate, the car literally wasnt turning it went round but then gave up and i would have gone straight into the tree if i didnt lift off.
proper scary moment, dont trust it now lol.

12th July 2009, 09:27
damp roads are usually worse than wet they are greasy. Yer of you life of on a corner you will fly sideways if your going quite quick lol, distrubs the weight of the car big time usually only on cars with a responsable bit of power cant do it on 1.4 ive tried haha.
You'd of been safer putting your foot in and having your front end moving round the corner.
WestCoastJosh
12th July 2009, 09:37
Yer it happened when the vtr engine was put in so it has some grunt.
I might not have hit the tree then lol if i was brave an kept my foot in i would have gone round eventually??
Just at the time really didnt think i would do it.

12th July 2009, 09:47
sorry but its not the car, its the driver
WestCoastJosh
12th July 2009, 09:49
So there was a way of stopping the car from understeering and do come back with the obv comment "driving slower" i was driving at a resonable speed but just underestimated the gradient of the bend.

if your going fast your not going to stop the understeer, but letting off the throttle suddenly isnt a wise move
WestCoastJosh
12th July 2009, 09:58
seems like a bad move now. but because i was heading for a tree i didnt think at the time.

12th July 2009, 10:10
inexperience in the car is what springs to mind
WestCoastJosh
12th July 2009, 10:15
have only been driving on my own since march so i am still a learner i suppose lol.
LeeM
12th July 2009, 10:17
i drive mine very hard and have yet to experience lift off oversteer.
im guessing you were driving too fast in wet conditions without enough exerience of the car?
WestCoastJosh
12th July 2009, 10:22
i was doing about 35-40 like i said. quite residential area, that i have never been down. corner came up, didnt look to sharp. slowed down slightly, but it was very sharp and just lost control. think i found the limit on a wet road now though.
LeeM
12th July 2009, 10:24
you might well have been going 35-40 but it was still clearly too fast for the conditions and road you were on
WestCoastJosh
12th July 2009, 10:26
Obviously was. learned my lesson, dont want it happening again.
thanks for not being to mean anyway, know how everyone hates this sort of "driving" on here unless its on a race track.

don't worry mate everyone does it :) just getting to know the car, but now you know the limit......so all's good, you got off lucky :)

you answerd your own question in the 1st post lol
"went into a corner faster than i should have"
dont blame the car becuase you cant drive
you dont need better suspension etc.. learn to drive
WestCoastJosh
12th July 2009, 10:31
Yer i was just giving all the details in brief. i realised after it happened that it was to fast. I can drive, or i wouldnt have passed my test, guess it dosent mean i can "good" yet though :n:

im not the one nearly crashing
i never once claimed i was the perfect driver
i stated a fact which was, you cannot blame the cars "poor handling" for a clear driver error
i have never once made this mistake ;)
D4N91
12th July 2009, 10:37
but other mistakes you will have :) and your trying to tell me you've never gone round a corner a little too fast and lifted off and the back become a bit twitchy ? :)

its alright mate, dont want any trouble cos of my error.

I dn't think hes blaming the car entirely, anyone with a bit of common sense knows that even the best drivers can be caught out by the road conditions, their own car and others on the road
tbh don't tempt fate because unless you drive max 20mph everywhere then theres always a risk
As you become a more experienced driver i believe you also learn to anticipate the road better
lakey_xs
12th July 2009, 10:46
end of the day its good that it has happened as now you know what to expect next time you lift off best thing to do is brake before or keep you foot down 106/saxo dont like to be upset during a corner had lift off loads of times in my xsi you get use to feeling it coming out and catch it

will agree 100% with that
not just learn to anticipate the road better, but generally mature / grow up mentally... the reason why insurance costs generally come down in price

Normally under steer is due one of 3 things. You were going to fast. You were braking and steering at the same time. You were using to much throttle.
Yes its normal to get lift off over steer in a front wheel drive car. Normally people put in a larger rear ARB to amplify this effect to help turn in and make the car even more pointy. However you really do have to balance the car on the throttle then.
I would warn you that if you are getting to a point where you are spinning the car on the road you really are driving to fast for your ability and you should slow down. Its very dangerous and if the police do see you driving like that they will quickly have your licence off you.
If you do wish to learn some basic advanced driving skills you can always go to a advanced driving school or a race school. Most do a week long intensive class that are normally quite good. They will not make you great but it will give you the basics you can build on.

i love lift off oversteer, its my friend. what profile tyres are you on, as with my 114 i get plenty of warning (55 profile tyres) of the arse end coming round quick enough to catch it and power out.

12th July 2009, 11:34
I'm guessing it was wet. you won't understeer badly in the dry the cars handle too well for that.
In the wet saxos can be dangerous. Drive slowly in the wet.
If you lift off in the wet it's a dead cert that you will oversteer.

12th July 2009, 11:36
it will always happen in fwd cars, in the situation, you dont think of anything else bar to get out of the 1st part of danger (which was this tree)
you got off lightly mate, just take it as a warning to slow down, the last thing you want is to loose your car :)

Answered your own question there mate!
Dont drive like a tit, learn to judge the road and take into consideration the conditions ect.

LOOS can be slightly fun if you know its gonna happen, not something for small backroadsor busy times of day mind
seems simple in the 306
but yeah you were probably just going abit too fast

It's been dry for a while, then it rained, so the roads were very greasy, I noticed that. One thing everyone learns with these cars is that you don't lift off in a corner, unless you're planning on inducing oversteer.

aye, roads always do that after a quick rain from several dry days, kist brings the crap to the surface and becomes slippery

you can get lift off oversteer in any FF car if you go fast enough. span mine a few times because of it and inexperience!
if you floored it you would have hit the tree. best bet was to gently lift off to regain grip. takes practice though!
