if the dip stick is on the right hand side as you look at it, then is a 90 bhp, if its more in the middle its a 98 bhp, hope that helps

I take it you've seen a car advertised and theres only pics of the car itself and none of the engine bay? Best bet is to go and have a look to see which colour rocker cover it has or where the dipstick is.

mines a mk 2 2000, and is 90bhp.
i think the engine change over was in 2001 sometime, so i cud be either, as aboveif the cat is under the car its a 90, if the cat is on the down pipe its a 98

nope engine change was middle of 2000 because mines 2000 and i got the 98, i went to citroen to find out aswell

its pretty certain

They are indeed, however sometimes they have had engine failures and have had the 90Bhp lump lifted in instead..

Origional VTR I was looking at has been sold, found a 2000 W Reg one, again no images of the engine bay so it could be either 90 or 98?

does the owner not know what engine their own car has?!

It is a garage and trying to communicate with them is almost impossible

Ok, was the switchover in 2000?

LeeM
31st July 2009, 17:11
switchover is in 2000. best way to tell is to look where the cat is, should be immediately identifiable in the cat when you open the bonnet

Byard
3rd August 2009, 09:27
I don't have access to the car, nor is there any pictures of it under the bonnet, does anyone have the date of the switchover so i can ask the garage when the car was registered and find out that way?

Daniel09
3rd August 2009, 09:37
date of the switch over was somewhere in the middle of 2000

if you vtr was registerd early 2000 you will have the 90
if it was registerd later in 2000 it will be the 98, providing it was new from the factory and not early stock

i have a 2000 X and i have the 98BHP
simply because mine was registerd in november

:)

when they changed to the mk2, all the engines were silver tops

although there were 2 made

the 90BHP
and the 98BHP

like i said the chenge over was in 2000

the mk 2's came out before that:cool:

Thanks for the useful info, the VTR i'm looking at is a W reg so its 50/50, i either have to ask the garage to send me a picture of the engine bay or go to the garage and look myself, but probably will contact them as the garage is about 50 mile away :n:

the change over from 90 to 98bhp models happened on y reg cars and newer. so if it is a x reg or older its got 90bhp, if its a y reg or newer its got 98bhp

Really?

So a 2000 W will be 90?

Bump, looking at buying a new car and need to know! Unless the 8BHP difference is just down to air intake and exhaust restrictions? In that case I will be replacing both anyway so it doesn't matter :panic:

nope change over was on X reg mate :wall:
if its w reg its deffo 90BHP

x reg 50/50

y 50/50 depending if its old stock / or had an engine change but more than likely 98BHP

the extra 8BHP dosent come from either of them

bits of the engine was redesigned to keep emisions down

if you have the 90BHP engine

you pay full wack tax,

the 98 is a better designed engine desighned to keep emitions down aswell as keep its power

cheaper tax

Byard
4th August 2009, 10:46
Lol, life would be so much easier if the adverts had pictures of the engine bay! Cos you ring up and end up talking to someone called Muhammad which is probably worse then talking to a brick wall..

Daniel09
4th August 2009, 10:49
i know the feeling, the garage where i got my car from was like talking to a brick wall,

took a week untill he actually let me take it on a test drive

i have a posi blue VTR, best car i have had tbh..

i have driven bigger 2.0 ltr cars in the past, and tbh, i prefer the saxo for the raw-ness of it

Byard
4th August 2009, 11:10
Never driven a saxo before but i'm sure it will be fun, especially coming from a 1.0l corsa :homme:

another way to tell is by what interior it has..

if the seats have stripes then its 90bhp
squares & triangles then 98bhp
