if you want to check wether its fooked or not when you take it out boil a kettle and pop it in if you can see it opening its ok if you can't its more than likely thats whats causing your problem

Ok nice one mate. Is the thermostat hard to get out?

I'm trying to find a pic on here but can't find a vts one!

no mate there not hard to get out, aint done for a while but i think there just a loose fit in the housing (the housing is the bit the rad hose goes to) dont forget to seal the housing back onto the block once removed though as it will more than likely leak!

LeeM

overheating rapidly, and no coolant coming out of the top hose when it does it!

Thanks button not on my screen! Used it too many times to thank Lee (below) haha!

Yeah, as lee says.. Overheating within like 2mins of being on idol, and no water coming out of hose when disconnected etc.. so i'm thinking and hoping its not the waterpump.. so i'm thinking thermostat?!

Thecherry0121
3rd August 2009, 18:04
hmm if theres no water coming out of the top hose would that not point more towards the water pump ?

It could well do I suppose.. I'm puzzzzled! Need to get the thermostat out and pour boling water on it so I can eliminate it really...

also have one here if you need one

LeeM

am i right in thinking even if the waterpump was knakcered the thermostat should still open at high temp and it would leak out because of the pressure?

Thecherry0121
3rd August 2009, 18:17
hmm im unsure if the pump isnt working then there will be no water pressure surley ?

JRC1
3rd August 2009, 18:26
Plan is to take out the thermostat tomorrow. Pour boling hot water on it and see if it opens and closes. I'm hoping it's not going to, which would suggest a new thermostat which are like £5 apparently. However, if it does work then my heart is going to sink, as this will then point towards waterpump/other issues and I will therefore have to take to a garage!

On another note, thinking back to when I started the engine up with the top hose disconnected, it was quite cool when I started her up so whether this would suggest why there wasn't any water gushing out..

Cheers to both of ya :y:

even with the waterpump not turning at all (which im sure it will be if its not leaking, it runs off the belt dont forget) there will be a lot of pressure in the system if the temps in the red. have you ever seen a rad cap blow off?

So you think it could well not be the waterpump then from what you are saying?

It was only in the red when driving back.. Didn't let it get right in the red when I had it on idol! - Turned it off before.. Didn't fancy a radiator cap blowing off lol..

Sounds like your thermostat to me. If it is stuck closed then no coolant will get thru to the top hose and to the radiator.

IF you are taking out the thermostat, then you are better off changing it anyway as it is not an expensive part.

If you plan to test the old one then the water must be boiling (100 oC). You may find that by the time you have poured water from a kettle into a jug it has cooled enough to not let the thermostat open.

could always put it in a saucepan on the stove ;)

So as soon as the kettle has bolied, I need to pour it in a jug and put the thermostat in.

I'm hoping its the thermostat.. I've been searching on here alot and heard something to do with resealing with some instant gasket sealant when putting the thermostat back? Can you shed any light on this?

Thankyou.

wait for the saucepan to boil and drop it in ad switch it off straight after :) as for the re sealing you have to remove the plastic bit that the top hos straps to ao you need to reseal between that bit of plastic and the metal housing

I agree with TheCherry, use the stove.

You'll need a new thermostat housing gasket. I tried to get one at the weekend and the motor factors claim that these are not sold alone anymore. You need to buy a new thermostat kit, which you need to make sure comes with a new gasket.

To be 'extra' sure then you can use an instant gasket. I use rhodorseal but Loctite 5922 seems ok too. You can get the Loctite from Halfords: http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10151&storeId=10001&partNumber=122542&langId=-1&cm_mmc=Googlebase-_-Engine%20Oils%20&%20Additives/Maintenance%20Fluids%20&%20Additives-_-Na-_-Loctite%205922%20Flange%20Sealant%2060ml&%24%24tid=wTgRZ5pAXJJWYyC_c7_r5AjC0baUzTFufglefMm5 DzozL53kWpm8seheu-xrUl7Z.

If you are in a factors then ask them for some gasket sealant suitable for a thermostat housing.

Oh, by the way, not too much sealant, just a little. You don't want it to run into the coolant and risk blocking the head gasket.

So i'll need a new thermostat housing gasket even if I were to use instant gasket? Where do you recommend buying a new thermostat kit from? Would it be best to buy the kit from Citroen, need somewhere to have it in stock on the day really as I want to try it asap!

Thanks for the useful post(s) :y:

James.

You can get a thermostat kit from almost anywhere as they are widely stocked on-the-shelf.

Google "motor factor" southampton and pick one closest to you. Give them a ring to make sure that they have it.

If you go to Citroen then it may take them a few days to order in the part.

If it comes with a rubber gasket like this: http://www.106parts.com/s2/page1.php?area2=2&sitepage=7&area3=9&area4=44&part=2454 then no need for the gasket sealant.

You could try Euro Car Parts: www.eurocarparts.com - type in your registration then hit the thermostat link under Cooling & Heating column.
