I think it is one unit along with the sensor on the right hand side of the rad.

I was under the impression that Mk1 had a big ass sensor (switch) screwed into the side of the radiator itself to control the fan and the mK2 uses the ecu to turn the fan on and off accoring to signal from from the water temp sensor.
