my mate has a mk2 vtr, all its got is full supersprint exhaust system 4-2-1 manifold and a oil cooler and it got 130bhp on the dyno, it beats vts's all day long, could the car be cammed??

29th September 2009, 19:08
Could be. More likely a badly set up dyno as it would need fairly substantial work to reach 130bhp

it was dyno'd at french car show this year, when he drives it fast then stopes the idle revs up and down on its own and i heard that meens its cammed
Aron

the dyno at fcs was pretty shit! you would no if the car was cammed as it would not idle at all.

29th September 2009, 19:24
if it idles up down up down then its probably cammed

130bhp off an 8v deffo screams aftermarket cam, or rollers as accurate as a loo roll and cotton wheel

29th September 2009, 19:26
Wrong. If it "hunts" on tickover, that could mean almost anything. "If" it's cammed and running rough, then it's not been remapped so will never make 130bhp that way.

Mine idles like a bag of shit at the moment.
Standard cams. :P

Wrong! just becasue it does not idle perfect does not mean its not remapped. mine could not be mapped any more perfect without a stand alone ecu yet it still bounces on idle.

i think 130 from a vtr is quite easily achievable.
there was a rallye running 130hp still an 8v

John from GMC had over 150 out of a 1.4AX many many years ago, and iirc it was standard inlet to (NA)

well single butterfly.
AX racing will have a bit more info on different 'race' engines john churned out a few years ago.
although again gmcs rollers have a rep for reading a touch high (but johns work has a rep for being better than most)

Isnt as easy as you may think though mate, my old spec was pretty big and was still only pulling about 125-130, probably could have managed more with a better remap tbh... an idea:
1.6 8v Silvertop Engine
Piper 285 Camshaft
Port & Polished Stage 3 Head
Simota Induction Kit
Competition Head Gasket
Competition Springs & valves
Vernier Pulley
Hi-Flow Heads Lightened & balanced flywheel
Oil Breather Filter
4-1 Stainless Steel GMC Manifold
Peco Stainless Steel Dual-Exit Exhaust System

I dont think you would get 130bhp from just a cam. I had a 1.6xsi with upgraded cam (cant remember type) R6 bike carbs and lightened pulleys and that was only just over 140

cammed cars do idol ino sum one with a cammed vts tht idols

It needs to be a pretty big cam to reach that with an 8v.
I reckon it might just be a mix of a mild cam, and an over reading dyno.

it was running 117.3bhp at fly when i got it lol..
the cam wasnt even working.. as the timing was out by miles, but with my de-cat, raceland with green induction, crapy ported throttle body and raised limiter. its running 128bhp at fly lol..
Also the fly wheel was skimmed by .2 off a kg and now its 4.7 instead off the 5.5 standard :D
Hid tuning reckon it hasnt been mapped, and if it had its been mapped to run standard cam.. so hasnt been done very well! hopfully pred should be happening then will be dyno remap ;)

No where did I say that a not perfect idle with a cam means it's not been remapped. I said that hunting (not chugging) could be any number of faults, and only after you said that a cammed car would not idle at all which I took to mean it stalls with no throttle?

dyno results can be taken with a pinch of salt.. if you mod the car and compare results on the same dyno you can gain some meaningful comparisms..
I used to organise RR days for another car club and the figures for the first 2 at one particular RR were pretty much spot on what we'd expect. Then RR number 3 a car mag came down. The dyno was put on shootout mode and everyone's car improved lol..
I through those slips away as my car came in at 217bhp.. 12 up on the previous day

Really? So have you sorted out the cam timing now then? A nice improvement in power there, sounds like what it should have been running in the first place tbh. The figures i had were from the previous guy who owned it :( once its mapped it should be lurvly... you still holding out for the pred then?
