what are tappets and what do they do

i have a vtr 02 plate. i have a cat back stainless steel system, what would the bhp be if a put a piper cam kit on it a 4 2 1 manifold, de-cat and dastek unichip and a bmc cda

i should imagine you will be running about 120BHP with those mods matey maybe a bit more!

tappets as you call them are actually called followers (tappets because they tap) they are what sites on top of your cam, one per valve, and when the cam turns the lobe pushes the follower up and consequently the valve its over down, this allows the valves to open when the engine rotates, obviously this is done in a certain sequence and the cam profile determines how long and when the valve opens etc.

you might gain 10/15 bhp from the mods but its the torque you should look for as vtr isnt designed for high power its torue (And torque drives wheels and gives acceleration, power is top end, but who cares about doing 120+?)

how would he, and a few more of us go about getting more torque rather than power?
