i have done exactly the same with my car, yes it is possible you just have to change a few bits over, sensors egr system (if your current engine has one fitted)

I've got it mixed up in my answer above - but if you use your current loom, and current sensors on a mk1 engine then it'll be fine.
The loom is the wires that connect all the engine sensors up to the Ecu and to the car. It's a bit like a skeleton, with a 'backbone' and branches coming off of it

Good shout - a vts engine abroad is a 1.4 8v?
If so then the manifold will fit but you need to fit a mk1 oil filter and thread, and tap up the oil hole in the block.
Plus you may have problems with the inlet, and the sensors etc. as the port spacing is different between mk1 and 2
