View Full Version : Camshaft rant......

Car went in Tuesday for a load of work including new camshaft.

After starting it late and getting held up with other 'emergencies' the garage popped into my work today to announce my new Piper camshaft (Supplied for a 2001 VTR) requires an M11 X 1.5mm pitch bolt to hold the vernier wheel to the camshaft, and the cam thats come out of the car is held in by an M10 bolt ! And they dont have the M11 i need......

I tried two fixing manufacturers we deal with at work, and one local supplier to no avail.Citroen and my camshaft supplier give conflicting stories (Earlier VTR's had M11 bolt here possibly ????),but the end result is ive had to order 5 (Minimum on that bolt for some reason) and they wont now be here until Saturday.Meanwhile the garage cant turn it over, set the tappets, timing or fug all else. Most unhappy im going to have lost the car for a week come the end of it all :wall:

Does anyone know off the top of their head if an M11 X 1.5mm pitch bolt is the norm here,or is it abnormal for a 2001 MK2 VTR ???????

There are differentces in bolt sizes in late earlier model camshafts! SOme of the vts's its pot luck as to what you have as there seems to be no real trend. Unsure on VTR though, but looks to be the same way lol.

Surely you have a local miscelanious store to buy bolts from. IIRC there standard 8.8 tensile. So should be easy.

Correct - standard 8.8...so not high tensile.

We have a small, but reasonably comprehensive stock of nuts and bolts at work (I work for an Engineering machine/fabrication shop),but its the M11 bit thats hard to get hold of.Same as M7 for Jap motorbikes.I contacted two MANUFACTURES and a huge local supplier and as soon as i started with the words "EM-ELEVEN" i was told "We dont do them".

M10's are ten-a-penny obviously........

Depends on the cam manufacturer I think - I had a Kent cam fitted to my 2002 VTR and the standard bolt was fine. It's probably good practice to replace the bolt anyway and use a little thread lock when screwing it through the pulley.

Yea - deffo. The bolt has a washer thats 'built-in' and looks like its heat-shrunk on perhaps as it doesnt come off.

If a model of car has has had different size bolts used,or for the sake of pennies and for the pleasure of knowing its been replaced i dont know why the manufactures dont supply a new one as a matter of course...

Mine is roller rocker - wondering if ive been supplied a cam for an earlier roller-rocker engine that also fits a MK2 silver-top.Or one designed for a Peugeot for example ?

Presuming they had no interuptions how long should a garage be expected to take to change a VTR camshaft ?

6hrs to fit a vtr camshaft, book time, or thereabouts. Not cheap.

vts camshafts can be done in 2 hours if you've done it a few times lol
