Just got my VTR back from 'engine overhaul'. All good apart from tappets are a little noisy. I watched myself while the garage adjusted them twice. Still sound alot more noisy than when it went in !
Can someone confirm the clearances for a 2001 MK2 VTR. Presuming it was originally a 98hp model (Roller rockers,silvertop,2 Lambdas...one in manifold one below, and cat in downpipe).
Pretty please........

They obviously arent the correct clearances - hence the noise and hence why im asking.I remember the previous time they were done by a different garage they had 'trouble' getting the right gaps.
Included in my overhaul was a new cam....which means the tappets would require re-setting (Hence i'll be fucked if im doing them !).
Was just trying to find correct info,so i can then see what the garage has set them to...

Cheers - that seems to be the concensus.
Found another post though where someone says GMC use .20mm inlet and .30mm exhaust and do these when hot ???
Any mileage in that ?

I done mine.
inlet 0.20mm
exhaust 0.40mm
Engine sitting over night, stone cold.

Turns out Piper recommend 0.20mm for inlet and 0.25mm for exhaust.
Garage has done them twice to these specs to be sure today, and its still not "perfect". Infact if anything they said the exhaust was a 'tight' 0.25mm as they were the ones that seemed to be the problem noise-wise.
Should i get them to narrow the gap of the inlet very, very slightly now ?
Or is a slight tappet noise just the nature-of-the-beast from an engine with non-hydraulic tappets ???? (Wasnt like this before though, and sounded and ran sweet as a nut !).

How overhauled is an overhaul?
Might just be shit in the oilways if theyre hydraulic tappets. Give it 1000 miles with diesel oil in, and do another oil and filter change.
however if its a nice shiny new head, ignore all i say and set clearances to inlet @ 0.20mm and exhaust @ 0.40mm iaw haynes.

Im a retard. Just read your post saying there non hydraulic. If thats the case then its all down to clearances mate, unless your garage are numpties it should be easy to remedy.
Have you double checked the clearances warm and cold yourself?

0.20 inlet and 0.40 exhaust should be really quiet when set properly, i.e with a cold engine. I'd take the car elsewhere to have them done.

would it not sound a bit different due to the bigger cam
this was the case on my mates xr2i fiesta anyway

Yes non-hydraulic tappets on a VTR - VTS are hydraulic.
Spoken to Piper technical dept - they specifically told me 0.20mm inlet and 0.25mm exhaust due to the cam profile and different timing settings. With these settings the car is still slightly rattly top end.....
Engine overhaul is new cam, followers, head gasket, valve stem oil seals, waterpump, cambelt kit, valves lapped in etc etc
What im trying to work out is standard Citroen settings are 0.20mm inlet, and so are Pipers suggested settings. Exhaust is 0.40mm standard Citroen settings and Piper suggest 0.25mm. (I also should mention Piper specifically told me these gaps were to be set when car is WARM ??????? !!!!!! ).If its still rattling slightly do i close up exhaust, inlet, both, neither or accept it as it is although still slightly tappetty.Ie: Is this usually a syndrome of cammed VTR's ??
Thouroughly pissed off with it all and needing help :-)

Ohh my bad - didn't realise you have an aftermarket cam in!
If it's a Piper cam, set the clearances to what they recommend. It will never be as quiet as it was with the standard cam though. After I fitted a Kent PT40 to mine (using their clearance figures) the tappets were a fair bit louder - not a lot you can do really.

No,no dont apologise......cheers for trying to help. And thanks for that info ;)
Until i spoke to Piper i didnt realise it should have been on non-standard settings either !

Sorry mate as above i didnt realise you were running an aftermarket cam. Should be sorted with their settings but expect it to be louder - even louder if you get forgies in.
