I have always wondered this, surely you will need abit more to fill the cooler and pipes going to it??

Fill your engine upto the max mark - run engine so oil gets hot and thermo opens and then top op accordingly.
The oil cooler and tubes won't store a huger amount of oil.

Level probs wont drop below the minimum level when the cooler gets filled.
All dpends on size and length of pipes and cooler.
Make sure you allow the oil to cool before rechecking level and topping up.
