Basically been a while since i have been on here, i was driving home last night and i think needed my tappets replacing, just as i got back into town im not sure if there was a bang or anything but my car basically lost alot of power and i had to clutch it home and my engine was making one hell of a loud knocking like my tappets had blown!?
just wondering if this is an easy/expensive job to sort was kinda told it would be easy to stick in a new lump! hope this aint the case as i am skint!
any advice would be great
oh and if you cant remember its a Saxo VTS 16v on 38k

sounds like a cambelt mate. do you have any break down cover?? if so call them out and get them to have a look at starting it

Be careful trying to start it as could cause more damage if the timing has slipped.
Get the recovery to tow you to a garage, unless you know how to check the timing on the vts - if you lock the bottom at TDC by turning the engine over by hand, can check if the camshaft pulley holes line up.
It shows you how to lock it all at TDC in the headgasket guide in the FAQ section at the top of the thread list.
If you lock the bottom off at TDC, then see if the top end is far out.
Or just get a garage to look at at and diagnose it. I'd look to do the cambelt every 60k or 5 years - if yours is an 02 plate and it hasn't been done it'll need to be done asap to be safe, could be too late though :S

cheers for the replys guys i started her earlier justfor a few seconds and there is some serious knocking under the bonnet sounds like metal on metal so i turned her off straight away, getting a tow in the morning to the garage so hopefully they will be able to sort it, pretty sure my tappets have gone though as there was some previous knocking under the bonnet but it has just gone big time now, hopefuly it will be something easily fixed as i could do without having to spend hundreds!

Worst case scenario, the belt has slipped a tooth or two.
This happend to me not so long ago. I bent all the exhaust valves on my VTS.
Luckily I had a mate who could fix it for me.
But at a garage it WILL cost you hundreds if it turns out you have the same problem!
Bad times dude.
