I am about to embark on a new mammoth pjoject of a VTS shell with no engine and would like some suggestions as to possible different engines that can fit inside the saxo bay.
Don't mind doing VTS, 206 engines etc but would like to start thinking outside the box.
Requirements:
Must be under 1600, NA and capable of delivering near 200bhp.
Fabrication and custom parts is not a problem but I don't want anything that's too heavy.
Fire away.....

Surely if it must be under 1600 then it makes sense to use the TU engine? saves lots of fabrication for engine mounts etc

Dunno. I was just asking the Q.
Wanted to know if there is a better base to work on

Would be crazy! I think Kiwi over on the RR has this engine in his 106? The noise using that with some jenveys upto 9k rpm would be a tad exciting :p import engines out the SIR II are 185bhp IIRC :fcuk:

Just read through his brief thread on RR. Doesn't look like much fabricating is needed tbh.
Just things like relocating the Fuses/battery/ecu to inside the car]

No, can't do NOS. I want to be at the top of Group A before moving to group C or D, whichever that is that includes up to 2000, tirbo, S/C and NOS

hmmmm, cant really go wrong with Honda engines tbh. But the TU engine isnt a bad base either....

B18 is out the Integra DC2 and their 200bhp in and around. Loads of varies of B16 engine, my mate had one out the SIRII which was 185 and the EK9 is 185 too. Normal ones are 167 iirc. :y:

Thing is Honda engines like the DC2 motor is quite highly tuned as standard. Like the head is nearly at its port sizing limits and also the exhaust system is at its optimum already, hence high power figures.
But yeah both engines are reasonably good :p

Agreed. It would be nice to see more FWD engine swaps as apposed to the usual redtops in Escorts, there even putting rotarys in escorts now and also vtecs. So a FWD vtec conversion would be pretty damn sweet.

One thing to think about might be the cost of getting a gearbox to get the most out of the engine, diff etc - whatever it may be?

The one kiwi is using looks like the standard lsd'd box that comes with the engine

Should be fairly bullet-proof? Well better than an MA anyway - should make it pretty reliable

b16b engine with ITBS and standalone ECU would pwn imho. Still wouldnt see a massive bhp gain over standard but its how it uses the power ;)
Also is some decent camshafts out there.

An old Ford CVH on twin Webers? Torque would get you flying off line, no waiting for VTEC to kick in! These engines have had the life tuned out of them so parts/methods are in abundance.
The old Beetle engine? Click Me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4zSld30cmw&feature=related). Dont really know much about them to be honest.
Toyota 4A-GE 20valve? Good for about 160bhp iirc.
If you do go Honda, look for a CRX being broken, the B16A can be had for little monies in comparison.

Had considered something like the super 1600 x flow engine but needs to be road legal so wouldn't be able to use that
Also thought about the hybrid ZVH turbo but a) it's a turbo and b) I don't think it would fit

Why are they illegal to have one the road?
What are they? Got any info one them, as i have heard of S1600s but never cam accross a "X flow engine" and would like to have a look :)

Wouldn't pass the emmissions test. It's an uber innefficient engine which is why it ws replaced with the CVH

Do you know what sort of times the 1600 class is running, as you need to base it all around them. I've had a quick look but didn't find anything valuable.
It might be worth even doing a 2.0 conversion... I would personally anyway, might not be competitive at first but you could always make it to be.
Some guy has a 4x4 106 cosworth on 106moaners that will be pushing over 650bhp in Jan, now that is a serious piece of machinery! 4x4 traction too!
Only reason i'm asking as i'm pretty sure it will be hard to be the anywhere near the best in the 1600 class.

What makes you say that? Some of the best class a times I've seen anywhere are high 13s. They are usually crx's or tb'd saxos/106's

I know you dont want a turbo but the Auti TT 1.8t 220bhp engine would be a nice conversion...BIG bhp achievable ;)

starlet/galanza engine? I know ther 1.3s but (don't know if you can) stroke it or bore it to 1.6 plus bigger turbo?

Oh right ok, well if they are high 13's then go for it, b16 engine would be great for what your after! I did try and find some times but couldn't find anything apart from the proper FIA group (dragsters).
I just thought that it would be something like time attack where you can't get anywhere near to the top if you havn't got like £50k+ to spend.
You going to strip absolutely everything out? I'd be looking at getting it lighter than Toads :A:

It would indeed but I wouldn't touch one without getting the quattro running gear. Anything over 250bhp needs to run 4x4 gear imo. I know theres a few people running 400+bhp 106's and saxos but with 4x4 transmissions they would be much, much quicker than they already are.
Then you start spending mega ££££'s though
EDIT: Go for it then Craig! Will be awesome!!
