View Full Version : Saxo VTS waterways could be better designed?

Well, I guess they could.
Anyway, I was taking a look at the way saxo's cool the other day, in particular the oil.

I could have this wrong, but it looks like the hot water comes out the top of the engine (assuming thermostat is open) and goes to the top of the radiator. This is normal.

Then on that pipe is another pipe to and from the oil cooler which is around the oil filter area.

--------
Now that seems to be fine for regular or even fairly hard road driving, but on track, the temperature can be a bit of a close run thing, so people buy oil coolers, install a second fan, get a better quality radiator or employ an arctic monkey in front of the radiator to improve cooling and or sound.

My point is fairly simple- why not run the oil cooler from the return pipe from the radiator and not from the hottest water possible coming out the top of the engine?

Where could I get radiator pipes from if I wanted them?
(Why are large bore hoses for things like induction soooo expensive for what thye are- that's a seperate issue.)

Tbh i have never had a problem with oil temp on track. Im using the factory setup. Brakes and other aspects of the car cause an issue long before the oil temp.

Vts rad is big enough to deal with enthusiastic driving. A well serviced engine will stay at halfway temp even when being thrashed.

The system in which Citroen decided to use works well enough

Hmm, I must have some other issue then- possibly a little underfuelling as that soon ramps up the temperature.

The radiator is certainly active as the temp changes when the fan comes on. This also implies that the thermostat is working too and that there is circulation (or the water wouldnt heat the radiator if thermostat shut), so water pump is moving water around. Could bad quality water be that much of a problem (assuming there is bad water in there)? The oil has been changed regularly and right before track days, along with the oil filter.
On track, my oil temp is right up just under the top white bar all the time and that is aided by the radiator fan being constantly on and the internal heater on hot with the fan on at 2 or when worse 3. The water temp isn't shockingly high due to the asistance of the heater blower being on which is all in an attempt to lower the water temperature to keep the oil cooler.

Any ideas? Also, what oil are you on?
