i bought a vts of my friend this weekend and when he bought it off someone, they said it had been cammed, but my m8 cant find the paperwork he got with the engine, so its in my garage now and i wanna get everything ready 4 wen i do the conversion, its got vernier pulleys so how do i know if it really has been cammed and how do i know wat make and profile they are etc? And can you remap an original ecu or is it easier to get an upgraded ecu if so which is the best to get? Thanks 4 any help

Should say on the end of the camshaft, or tell us whats stamped on the camshaft as can show that they are standard. Can get a power run on a dyno to indicate whether its got fast-road cams

Can remap Ecu

How longs a bit of string for which is the best standalone Ecu

the reason i ask is wen it was in his car it wud have gud and bad days mainly good days (it wud anialate my other m8s vts) and on bad days it wud only keep up with it, but hes just told me he was running it on an unlocked vtr ecu, so i wud imagine this wud be the problem because if it was on a vts ecu and has got cams like the previous owner told my m8 it was whip my m8s vts all the time am i right? Also do you have to have a remap when u put cams in?

take the rocker cover off and have a look at the markings on the camshaft.

what are you doing with a vtr Ecu on there - what code has it got on the top of it ?

Depends on what cams you've got in there

standard vts well driven would keep up with an unmapped cammed vts on shite timing

I wouldn't judge your own car against someone elses tbh, it'll only mislead you

standard vts against an unmapped vts with 708s/ph3 is always quicker imo especially top end.

as said check the ecu number too.

no this is the situation- my mate bought a vts engin off someone and they said it was cammed, p&p, 4-2-1 manifold & its got vernier pulleys he had paperwork to prove it so when a mechanic put the engine in his saxo they used a vtr ecu... Dont ask me why anyway someone wrote his saxo off (rear end) and now ive bought the lot so wat im saying is when i get take the rocker cover off on saturday and see what is printed on the cams, what is then next step do i buy a vts ecu unlocked and get it remapped to suit the cams or run it with the ecu thta my mate has told me is off a vtr even tho it ran ok with that???

what code is on the Ecu - he might think its a vtr Ecu whereas its actually a vts one hence it runs okay

Depending on the cams a remap would be beneficial

vtr one wont fit the vts engine unless its using a modified vtr engine loom.

the 1.4 one does though and it runs awfully
