View Full Version : Heatwraping my manifold

Hey guys.
Well im hoping to get this done in my 2 weeks off.
2 reasons really, my manifold looks terrible and for the gains/heat reduction it may give.
Just a few questions really (yes ive searched!)
It will be to wrap a 4-1 manifold, how much will i need exactly?? Been looking at this HERE (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Exhaust-Manifold-Heat-Wrap-Bandage-50mm-wide-10M-ROLL_W0QQitemZ220521513419QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Ca rsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item33581b41cb) which says its 10 meters long.... im presuming i will need 2 roles of this but just wanted to check. The above also comes with SS cable ties.
Now im guessing with mine being a 4-1 ill wrap each one as far down as i can get it, then wrap abit further up from when they join untill i reach where it joins to the centre pipe, correct?
Finally, ive been looking at this HERE (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HIGH-HEAT-EXHAUST-WRAP-COATING-THERMO-TEC-11oz_W0QQitemZ180366955785QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Ca rsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item29feb55509) probs get it in Aluminium, would that be any good also, just to protect the wrap??
Any advice would be good :) :)
Will also do a "how-to-guide" when i come to do this :)
Thanks guys :y:
Karl.

Definetly get 2 rolls, 10 metres isn't all that much considering the width of it.
And yes get the coating, every little helps :)

Thats how i have seen it done in the past :)

Thanks mate :)
and the coating is to go ontop of the wrap lol
Mainly to protect it from oil and other contaminates.
Ive seen people saying to wet the wrap before trying to wrap it, is this best or not really needed ??

I have heard the wet thing aswell, dont really know as i havnt done it myself so cant really help you there i am afraid.
And i thought the coating went direct onto the manifold
But get it anyway to protect the wrap, i have seen wrap turn really dirty / horrible after about a year so it would be beneficial.

Aren't you going turbo?
Might be worth waiting and wrapping your turbo manifold and down-pipe?

Invest in some good quality stainless steel tie wraps to secure the wrap mate
* EDIT* Make sure you wet the wrap aswel just before you put in on ;)

1"x10 wont be enough, 2"x10m is plenty though

Yea i am mate but wont be till summer time when its finished, the turbo downpipe is already heat wrapped and im using a adapted standard mani for my turbo so cant heat wrap it
1"x10 wont be enough, 2"x10m is plenty though
Thanks for clearing that up mate :)
why is it that u wet it before applying???

wet it before applying as when it dries the wrap shrinks firmly onto the mani mate....

the 2" by 10m should be loads but never do any harm if you double wrap it like i did on my btb mani, the wrap needs to be wet when you fit it lets the wrap set and also keeps the dust down, Give it a good spray with hi temp paint or a sealant to stop it socking in oil and water.

Think i will buy 2 JUST to be sure, and yea, i may double wrap.
Will the paint stuff in the second link i posted be ok to spray once ive wrapped it??
Just wondering, if im weting the wrap, how long will it take to dry so i can spray it, as obviously cant spray it when its wet OR on the car...

what differences in performance do you usually see by heatwrapping and why?

None it just keeps the heat under the bonnet down.
Some mite say it helps lower intake temps but when a saxo is moving there is not to much hot air under the bonnet.

Dont forget exhaust scavenging :P
It basically makes the exhaust gases hotter, which in theory makes them flow faster :p

lol never needed to think about that in mine since my wraped btb still glowed cherry red so think the gasses were flowinf quite fast.
