hey i am starting to worry about this really im not sure if it because i leave my engine running alot when im out or what but with very sensible driving in the snow and ice i only got 150 miles to a full tank could this really be due to leving on idle in the summer i got 250 miles to a tank so im getting a 100 miles less and im driving slower any ideas??

Behind passenger sill infront of rear wheel. At that rate your getting aprox 15mpg, there must be a problem somewhere. Does MIL light ever come on on dashboard?

no mate, if the tappets are loose then fuel gets used alot more, especially if they are really loose

Fill your tank up to full then whack some redex injector cleaner in it, thats what I did when mine was drinking more fuel than usual and solved it.

Failing that, if it hasn't had a service in a while, give it one.

If the tappets are adjusted incorrectly ie gapped to big then all that will happen, appart from the noise of the cam lobes whacking the rocker arms, is the valve lift will be less than normal, the valve will open later and close earlier as well. In theory this would use less fuel and your performance will be down as well.

Please don't be offended but don't post if your not sure and if your not sure ask, people will be happy to tell you whats what.

Have a good new year mate

i serviced it abit myself just an oil change and flushed the cooling system anything else involved? i had another vtr before this one and used to get 250 miles to a tank in that. my new one in the summer was averaging 200 to 250 miles i have looked at the fuel filter and doesn seem to be any leaks will have a proper look another day though.

4hrs of idling will reduce your mpg alot :|

adamm

yeah i can imagine im going to use some of that redex and not idle so much see if thats better before i spend more money having it looked at by a mechanic.

Clean the air filter and re-oil it, change fuel filter, also change oil filter when doing an oil change aswell, check all tyre pressures are correct.

4 hours of idling?! what the fucking fuck are you doing for 4 hours?!

anyways man, it's the cold pure and simple. At idle the engine generates bugger heat relative to it's normal operating temps. The cold will do it's best to suppress that heat in the engine - result... engine runs richer. More fuel chomped on.

why you leave it for 4 hours idling?? LOL!!!!
have you solved this yet?? if so let us know what it was!!!

adamm

left it for 4 hours so i didnt get cold when i was out. no havent found out yet going to put some redex in when i fill up next and not going to leave it idling for so long. see if that helps.

engine was idling from warm but are you saying becasue the general temp is colder it will try harder to keep warm??

I don't understand how you'd be sat in a car for 4 hours doing nothing? Trust me, it'll help. you're doing 0 MPG when you're just idling.

Exactly that man :)

Thinking about doing that, ive got some old air filter oil from my old nitro rc cars will this be ok 2 use?

Would of thought so mate, you'll only need a thin layer on it but best to go with genuine filter stuff.

negative. it's not just any old oil that'll work.

do it properly and don't skimp.

i did say with bits of driving inbetween in one of the posts somewhere but yeah other night wen out with my mates and sat in our cars im not a stupid chav that likes to wheelspin everywhere though im past them days haha. but was freezing so i left it running to keep warm. and i will see what i get to this full tank and update the post as to what i get as im hoping it is just i was idling. would check for a fuel leak but surely it would be going alot quicker and would drop when i get in my car??

naaa, you could have a slight split in it, although it was proper piss fuel out when the fuel pump is priming/engine is on.

okay then mate i will have to check that then and see how it goes. if the weather wasnt so crap then i would of chacked that already lol.
