View Full Version : Turning off engine managment light?

It came on a few weeks ago, I'm guessing because of the de-cat pipe that was on there when i bought the car. Cat is going back in tomorrow is there any way i can get the light off or will it do it itself?

take it to a garage and put it on diognostic machine to see what the problem is and reset it its only about £20-£30

No I'd quite like to know if anything goes wrong in future.

I'm 99% sure its the de-cat causing it and I'll be fucked if I'm paying £30 for someone to press a button on a computer.

Feel free to rub it in a little more.

not rubbing it in lol its a common fact when you decat it the light comes on have you sleved the 2nd lambad sensor?

I sleeved the second sensor and wish i hadnt bothered haha

jamiemackie
9th February 2010, 17:48
No it goes into the de-cat where it would go on the cat as standard.
Doesn't matter anyway as standard cat and exhaust is going back on tomorrow.

So do i need to pay someone to plug it into a computer to get rid or is there another way?

jamiemackie

Can anyone shed any light on this?

blackie_2k5

what engine you got? 98bhp? second lambda shouldnt go back in the exhaust, its supposed to sense clean air, after the cat, if you remove the cat the air wont be clean, your supposed to remove it and sleeve it so its still sensing fresh air,

Nah mk2 vts.

i think i may have worded the question wrong.

At the moment it is decated and the em light is on.

Im going back to standard tomorrow so will the light go off on its own or is there a way to do it?

You'll need to get a garage to turn it off

Jamie your has got a second lambda after the cat or where nos the de-cat is installed?

You want to install the cat anyway? If yes, just do it! After the cat is fitted the dashlight will go off, you don't have to reset it, by a dealer!

If the light was on cause of the de-cating:A:

ahhhhhhhhh i get you now, if you take the battery off and leave it overnight it should reset the ecu and you light should go off, if you rde cat was causing the light to come on it shouldnt re appear, if it does within a few weeks youve got another prob and you'd need a diagnostic to fault find it

In my opinion an OBDII ECU will never set back any light, by taking it appart from the battery.

The light will turn off after a few seconds (cycle of lambda loop) the engine is started and the second lambda tells now the cat is ok(fitted, again hehe)

errors show up because of the loop, not stored in a memory bank, if your ecu loses power when its re powered the light "should" be out, BUT if you do have a problem the ecu doing its job properly should read the sensors and your light will come back on as the problem will be once again read

You are right but I often had my battery off, and of course there a several errors that will stay in memory, even when the error isn't there anymore.

Maybe having the battery off for a longer time!

ABS sensor errors will turn off, when they are fine again for example the cat light also.

Few years I had some injection mixture errors, that were only sporadic but the errors stood in the dash till they were deleted by software.

yes because these erros come up as a certain code, whole reason for having diganostics(working out what and why), emissions related errors dont store on the ecu as theyre constantly sensing to allow for changes in air/fuel mixture rather then an individual fault :)
well dependant that is....

I have a reader MrMackie, When i had a decat the light came on but the error was stored and didn't reset with a battery disconnect.

so if it doesn't go off can you fix it for me?

Just buy one off Ebay there only £20. I have one here but in liverpool so bit far for you. lol

Great little tool for the ££. I had the same problem as had a decat, my OBDII showed up catalyst efficiancy bla de bla, Iv put a cat back on and now wana know if the light will just go out after a few cycles as the OBDII wont turn it off.

Engine mangement light will come on if decat on Saxo with lambda sensor after cat. It will come on wheather it's in the decat or in the sleeve. If you put the standard cat bak on the light will go off but not straight away. you'll have to drive it about for a bit first. To clear the memory on your ECU, the battery needs to be unplugged for a while. Not sure how long on this but suspect a good few hours.

first of all id make sure both wires are in propperly under your seat and passanger seat..if that dont sort it then disconnect ECU and battery overnight..that should reset your ECU and wipe any lights out on your speedo

How far does it need to be driven. I'v heard on the net that it has to be so many cycles of warming up and cooling down the sensor, think it was about 15 times. Seems a bit random to me like, but heard everythin from need to disconnect battery, to that wont work, to go to a garage, to it will go off automaticaly. Anyway about 3 cycles later and mines still on. DOH! :wall:

is it hard to take out the bulb lol
