can you put a 8v vtr gearbox in a 16v vts will it work? and will it last?? cheers

Why would you want to? Im pretty sure the vtr box is the longest in the range. But if your certain you want to do this it will fit yes.

Correct, VTR is the longest/worst box for acceleration get something like a rallye S1 or S1 box or a bit longer a 1.4 XSI box :y:

But you can fit it by all means iirc...

Nice section choice to post this in.

Yes it will fit, all MA gearboxes fit all TU Engines.

VTR is the longest box, it will reduce your accelaration considerably but give you a higher top speed if you care or even manage to get it that fast.

If its for a temp fix or you dont mind about performance its fine yeh.

my vts gearbox is knackered in my car but my mate has a vtr gearbox in his garrage and said i could have it, just wanted to no if it would be a straight swap or loads of messing around?

In that case yeah straight swap :y:

hhmm will it be crap acceleration then?

You probably will notice a difference yes but i couldnt say as ive never tried it lol.

ive got vtr gearbox on my vts and its rapid aceleration and top end 70mph 2nd 105mph 3rd 132 4th gear and off clock in 5th

It isnt rapid accelaration compared to the other gearboxes lol

If you think it's rapid acceleration then you really need to try another box as the VTR box is the slowest accelerating one of them all!

No reverse speed? Dissapointed.

like what do you recon the vts box will be better aceleration and top end

I don't think you'll notice a difference in acceleration.

People fit a closer ratio box and think their car is "accelerating way quicker", but it's just going through the gears quicker because the ratios are shorter. So they're spending less time in each gear and gives them the impression they are accelerating alot quicker.

Acceleration is determined by the torque of your car mainly.

If anyone thinks i'm wrong then show me some facts to prove me right, i'll be happy to learn...

Also is the VTR box longer ratio in every gear to the VTS? Sure the VTS box will top out at 135.4ish mph? Will the VTR box pull further?

The ratio's are the same, it's the final drive of each box thats different. I have had a VTR box fitted to my VTS (longest box) and now a S1 Rallye box fitted to my VTS (shortest box). I am not just saying this but the difference is huge... The VTR box felt so sluggish, whereas the S1 box pulls at any revs in any gear and does accelerate noticeably faster than with the VTR box and VTS box fitted.

To answer your question, yeah you will get a higher top speed with a VTR box fitted to a VTS but not much point as you'll need a stupidly long straight to get to that speed! S1 box tops out at 120mph ish iirc with a 7250 limit.

Yeah the S1 Rallye box is a bit of an exception i've heard they are quite a torquey wee box. The other boxes though i don't think theres much in them and don't see how people can differ much between them in terms of acceleration?

So the VTR and VTS box both have same ratio but different f/d?

My mate put an S1 Rallye box on his GTi which has a cammed, ported n polished C2 VTS engine with motorbike bodies and standalone management, and he said the difference even with the S1 box isn't much noticeable. Just goes through the gears a bit quicker.

Maybe with a decent bit of power goin through the box it makes it less noticeable if the ratio's are a bit longer.

From what i've learnt on here.. All Saxo/106 boxes have the same gear ratios but different final drives.

Yeah I guess with the power of what your mates gti is running at it wouldn't be as noticeable as regardless of what box he used it will seem quick if you get what im saying. It's such a difference imo though and alot of people on here who have got one or been in one with an S1 box will agree. :y:

The fact that it is going through the gears quicker, is due to it increasing its speed quicker.

You still have the same rolling radius and rev limit, the issue comes when people think that it will improve the 0-60, the extra gear changes can make this slower, however actual in gear performance can be notably improved.

not true mk1 ax's have TU's and run a different bell housing so there gearboxes wont fit the later engines
