View Full Version : Can an air filter cause misfires?

I bought my VTR with an aftermarket air filter already on it, and got a mate to look over it on diagnostics.
He said it wasn't showing any specific problems but it was misfiring and he thought it could be down to the air filter.
Am I right in thinking that the sensors are made to deal with a specific air intake so the filter might be damaging it?
Thanks for any help! :y:

It's just the air filter I think? I couldn't tell you the brand as the car's in the garage at the moment and I haven't had it long!

Is it a open cone? Enclosed? etc

I'm not sure to be honest, I'm not too good with filters and induction kits. Is there any way of telling by just looking at it?

In short no, it is extremely unlikely that the air filter will be causing the missfire.

Check the plugs, they should show the problem :)

easy solution is to try it without the filter and see. despite what some might say it won't do any harm for a test run (and probably won't do anything over a long period).
Check the plugs though. By that I mean look at them, if they're dry looking and 'clean' then its probably pre ignition or lean misfire, sooty would point towards a poor spark and possibly either too rich or bad coil pack.

Cheers for all the replies, haven't been able to get on here til now. Slightly worrying that I had the plugs and coil pack replaced a couple of weeks ago? I'll have a look at the plugs though and might try and get my hands on a standard filter :y:
