im going be getting a 1998 vtr (early silvertop) engine to go in my quiky.
i will be getting all the gaskets, seals replaced before it goes in so perfect time to add a cam.

what cam's will run on standard timming and without an ecu and what gains will these give??

will the blacktop xsi and rallye cam fit???
if not im asuming its the newman ph1?

its me trying to be abit tight and not buy a vernier pully.
any info would be great. cheers.

For silver top engines: Newman PH3 or Kent PT40 will offer a slight gain - fine at standard timing and works fine on standard map. Not massively sure with black top engines, I'd imagine an equivalent cam should be fine - Newman PH2 I think it is for non-roller rocker setups?

yes your right the ph2 is for the rallye/xsi's head its pretty much the same as the ph3 just made for a different head, also why fit a rallye cam? you might as well just fit a rallye head, i just sold my rally head for a £50 but if you did get a rallye head with a ph2 cam coupled with the rallye inlet you could be seeing near 120bhp with a remap

ive herd of people putting the rallye head on other 1.4 blocks but not on a 1.6 block and i want a 1.6 engine becuase of the gain in toruqe.

so if the ph3 newman cam will run on standard timmings why do people buy vernier pullies??

Because best power isn't made at standard timing (although with 8V engines, it's going to be somewhere near).

With a Kent PT40 in my silver top... standard timing: 110bhp ATF, 2 degrees advanced: 118bhp ATF.

8 bhp difference is quiet abit extra.
take it you need the timming set up on a rolling road?

a really popular mod is fitting a rallye head on to a 1.6 vtr engine, bolts straight on and is just really a cheaper way to cam your vtr, the rallye cam is only a mild cam so i wouldnt expect great gains unless youy put a ph2 cam in there, and as leeumh said most people wouldnt fit a cam and not set the timing up or get a remap

a 1998 vtr engine should be a blacktop

early silvertops came in 2000

I did yeah. The place that did mine made an arse of it though, so make sure you take it somewhere reputable. :y:

Silver top - roller rocker. Black top - non-roller rocker. :)
