Hi people,
I have come into some money and want to spend it on improving the engine on my standard mk2 vtr.
Am i better off turbo-ing it or maybe highlift cams with a remap?
Not sure, thanks

in all honesty, you're better off putting it in the bank and saving it for a better car. something i wish i'd done years ago!
if you still want to spend money on tuning it, you need to allow a lot more than £1500 to turbo it properly.

as most people will say the cheapest way of getting power is 16v it, then spent the rest of your money on the 16v
if your doing the work yourself then you should be able to put in a 16v lump and add cams and a remap with your budget

If you wanna make it a properly fun toy id say:
-Bigger brakes, 283mm with good disks and pads
-Lowered 40mm on good quality shocks and springs
-Upper and lower stut braces
-Bucket seats, harnesses and half cage
-Full exhaust system
-Decent induction kit
Should be great fun on the twisty roads :)

Is currently lowered 50mm - 16v is an option, what bhp would a 16v with a nice cam setup and breathing mods looking like on a rolling road???
16V + Breathin mods, 266 calipers, average suspension set up like spax.

160bhp+ potentially as long as its running sweet

Depends on cams, and aload other things.
Decent breathing mods plus cams like ph3's should see a minimum of 145bhp.
Don't go getting hung up on BHP figures.
BHP figures are for pussys that sit in the pub all day enjoying beer and talking about cars. The real car enthusiasts will be out enjoying the car for what it can do out on the twisties.

i take you're assuming he puts throttle bodies on aswell?
150bhp is the normal for cams and map

okay so 16v engine - £500 for a decent one??
cams - £400
manifold - £300
Induction kit - £100
Cam fitting??
Remap??
That about right??

16vs don't handle all that well with 120bhp (despite what people say) so wont be all that great with 150bhp.
Have you factored in the cost of fixing all the little problems your car more than likely has? Plus giving it a service? etc

im unsure o prices so if someone could help me with basic pricing that would be good - loved the idea of a turbo running a steady but fun low boost... not possible for this budget??

if your only thinking of spending on the engine cams and remap is the best opition in my opinion.

?
Don't get me wrong i'm not saying there a bad handling car, although as standard they do roll about abit, i think anyway. My point is most standard suspension will be worn out by now so to get the most from 16vers a decent kit is needed.

anythings possible but you may have to compromise on certain things. theres no reason you cant turbo it for under 1500 quid, if you do most of the work yourself. but remember one important rule, power is nothing without control. so turbo'ing a near enough standard saxo is ok until you realise braking becomes an issuse, then the fact your going so much faster you don't have the sufficent grip in the corners.
and most saxo owners are still young and nieve and think inductions kits and big bore exhausts give extra hp and make a noticable difference. so take everything on here with a pinch of salt.
so what is it you want from a car?
do you think your saxo is worth spending 1500 on?
if you sold you saxo what other car could you get?
imo a saxo is still a chav wagon, so if someone gave me 1500 I'd sell that motherf*cker and get me something decent.
your money though.

Have a look at the 106GTI (albeit it has better handling than the vts.. but more or less same car), its "16V with 120bhp". Its one of the best, if not 'the best' handling cars in its price range.

I agree with the above. However the OP did ask £1,500 to spend on the 'engine'.
If it was 1,500 of my own money and i was drunk enough to spend it on my saxo then i would go for
16V - £400ish
Panel Filter - £30
Exhaust - £120
Manifold - £150
Pred ECU - £500ish
Average suspension set up - £200
266 Brake setup - £100
Then i'd save up for some decent tyres lol.

Andy charges £500 for fitting and mapping. If his prices havnt changed. That means a trip down there or paying him to make a trip up.
Add to the £1500 and save for turbo ;)

According to TopGear, its the second best handling car in the world!
For the budget id be really tempted with a DIY turbo in your position.

As stated i did really just want to improve the engine of the car i already have - got no problems dropping a 16v into it but I could do a diy low boost turbo setup for this money and be very happy i THINK..
