Did some back to back testing on the rollers at Alan Jeffries in Plymouth today.
Car is a VTS with Raceland Manifold, Magnex De-Cat and Magnex Cat Back. Also have the standard airbox with a K&N panel filter.
Graph:

Red line is standard airbox with K&N.
Blue line is with Raceland Induction Kit and red filter.
With K&N panel filter: 127.6Bhp @ 6400Rpm and 118lb/ft @ 3500Rpm
Raceland Enclosed Induction Kit (Red filter): 132.1Bhp @ 6500Rpm and 121lb/ft @ 4500 Rpm
Very interesting to say the least. 5.5Bhp gain from fitting a Raceland Induction Kit :)

I'll pass judgement until see graphs - is good that someone has done back to back tests though !! Fair play to that and posting up the results ! :y:
Max bhp was 100rpm later, and max torque was 1000rpm higher with a raceland than panel filter which is interesting

i dont wanna believe it ive got a K&N panel filter lol if this is true im going to get a raceland kit lol but id have the upgraded green filter

It's definitely a big jump from going from a panel filter to a enclosed setup :y:

Have to say I was amazed at the difference too!
Gonna get the graph up in a bit.

oh right i thought the general view was that a panel filter in the oem air box was the best set up? my mate has a bmc cda lying around which i could have if i wanted might ask him how much he wants lol

My own experience with the panel filter vs enclosed setup (I had a green one) was that the enclosed setup made the engine feel a bit flat - whereas the panel filter/standard filter setup with the intake tubing removed felt like the engine was happier to rev.
That's just how it felt to me whilst driving. The figures don't lie, but the real proof as to whether it's worth jumping across to an enclosed setup is in the graphs.
You have to remember it is a hot day too + there are a few other variables. I'm not slating the result as on face value it looks good, but you have to question things to be able to make your own decision up about information you read.
I hope Raceland have plenty of stock of the enclosed setups as no doubt they'll be inundated now :P

Define best ...............
My definition of best would be the setup which made the engine feel best.
It will depend on the torque and bhp lines on the graphs.

Were you using the standard intake pipe and resonator box with the airbox?

lol yea im gonna order one depends how much my mate wants for his bmc lol but its likely a brand new raceland will cost less than a second hand bmc lol

I'm not sure these tests are always fair (not saying yours isn't) if it was on the rollers with the bonnet down like when your driving then I see that as a fair comparrison. If the bonnet was open then surely the fans would be blowing air into the engine bay differently to when on the road.
Big difference, bit to big I say...

well ok, which produces more power

where do you want that power produced :P all up top ? Or a nice spread with a bit low down !?

It's not always about what makes the most power - although it's making more power with the Raceland, it sounds to me like the car has lost some 'low end' pickup. Maybe not enough to notice in the real world though.

low down, really with a vtr gearbox i want as much low down power as poss ha

between 3 and 4k its producing less power. so road use (unless you kane it everywere) panel if overall the better. that said id still buy the raceland :P

Just to clarify, my panel filter set-up is the standard airbox with the resonator box and piping removed and replaced with a length of cold air ducting to the scuttle mounted OEM scoop.
The Raceland Induction Kit was using the red filter and has done more miles than my nearly new K&N panel filter. With a brand new Green filter in the Raceland I'd expect the performance gain to be even bigger :)
Also the car was left on the rollers, the Raceland removed and then the standard airbox assembly was fitted. This took no more than 4 minutes. Pretty conclusive evidence that a Raceland Induction kit is better (something I'd never have believed till today!).

Interesting :) I think a lot of induction kits tend to shift the engine's torque up the rev range so it loses a bit of pickup at lower revs but then get a bigger boost at the top. From experience my car always feels smoother and revvier with just the standard airbox but I am thinking about one of these kits now even if just for the noise :p

i have a raceland on mine with 3 holes drilled through the slam panel for more cold air. car sounds awesome but definately lost a lil bit low down, so i put an open induction kit inside the raceland lol it was a wolfrace air filter just fit inside and scoops up cold air now sounds beefy :)
