I got my grades through today and they were awful tbh.

I needed an A and a B to get into the course I want. But got 2 C's and an F :(

I'm gutted.

I also do not want to go do my Insurance course cos it isnt what i actually want to do.

So I have enquired about Motorsport Engineering through clearing, anybody do it on here who could tell me what its like?

Thanks, Ross.

I didnt do it but did 2 years of automotive engineering at coventry uni before leaving(stupidly). There will be alot of maths and physics but the lads who were doing it there had a proper roar, building formula fords and taking them racing etc. I wish I had gone straight onto that course, i know I would have stuck it out and been doing something i love.

Good luck mate, hope you make better choices than I did!

Did it at Coventry Uni, but it was pretty much a glorified Mech Eng course with a couple of bits about suspension/drivetrain. Was alright, and you got to fuck around in the workshops a fair bit.

I do Motorsport Engineering Level 3, its just mechanic stuff, if you doing BTEC, 10 units are normal mechanic stuff, the other 2 are Motorsport based.

I should be off to do this at brunel in september. They had a couple of pretty sweet looking single seaters and were remapping an r6 engine.

Win, I like the sound of it, I might have to go do Maths again cos my grade is shit tbqh. But i'm willing to do it.

good lad :) it really depends where you do the course to what type of things you will be doing. if its based near a racing track then theres loads of practical testing ect.

Yeah, theres only one Uni up here who do it so fingers crossed.

im studying my masters doing mechanical engineering, done my third year an aproaching my fourth and final year. Its a very similar course to motorsport engineering apart from a couple of modules are different, i opted to do mechanical so that when i graduate there is a much larger variation of jobs to apply for etc wheras with motorsport you are limited to a certain area and therefore jobs will likely take longer to get

thats my 2pence, hope it helps

also a hell of a lot of maths is involved so make sure you are happy with everything you have seen so far

i am at hull uni, very good engineering department. when i applied it was in the top 5 in the uk for engineering.

i needed BBB or ABB at a-level, i cant remember which. if im honest you do miss out on a fair bit of uni life as the work load is a hell of a lot more than people on other courses but i am doing somthing that i prefer and enjoy (sort of). it will be worth it in the end

Work doesnt bother me, I was going to be doing History and Politics which was going to be essay and project after essay and project at the uni I wanted to go too.

im pleased work dont bother you as you need that attitude to get an engineering degree:y:

i know someone who does history and politics and he has never had more than 9 lectures a week in all of his three year degree and never more than 4 essays in a year. to put things in perspective first year i had 24 hours of lectures, 2nd year i had 21 hours and my third year i had 16 due to doing a dissertation etc. on top of all this i had at least 3 assignments in every fortnight.

providing you make a lot of friends on your course and get friendly with the lectures its not too bad but the amount of effort needed is a lot.

good luck with your decision mate :y:

all the best, hope you get in.

us engineering lot do work hard and play harder tbh as we spend soo much time in the lab, library and study rooms so we make up for it when were not working :y:

Try and get through on clearing, you might be lucky, especially if most people with conditional acceptances don't get in too. If not can you not spend another year doing something else at level 3 to get more UCAS points allowing you to enter the course? Do they do a foundation year for the course?

What ever you do though don't do the other course if it is not what you want to do.

BBM

Yeah im applying through clearing mate. I need to see what UCAS say this week but i'm hoping its ok to do what I want to do.

+1 good advice. every engineering course i applied for years ago all had foundation years available at the time

yes and make sure you do what you want, if your spending at least 2years doing it, it has to be something you fully enjoy

remappings pretty simple tbh

yes they do, because the final year project for the meng is to build one.

your on about the formula student, brunel had some f3 single seater things a while ago to test as i was chatting to the race team at Rockingham

my brother did motorsport engineering at swansea, left after a year, hated it because it had hardly anything to do with motorsport, 2 weeks after he left he was working for a local race team and learnt more in the first week with them than he had in over 2 years at uni

but he doesnt have the paper work and learnt differnt things im doing both atm
i learn the practical side at work but uni is much more technical, first year is a base anyways and is very similar to automotive in case people want to swap(well its like this at cov)

i have the btec but without the uni you wont realy get very high in the team, maybe he will but they tend to like papers higher up, as for the teams from what the people ive spoken to say everybody shifts about the company's anyway but even cosworth have monkeys working for them,
not to put a downer on you brother but qualifications will help alot later on when he wants to move up the company

he was quite high up, not 1 of the monkies, now works for one of the teams who does the gt racing/le mans, they've been helping him with his own car and supporting him

well depends on what areas you target i suppose like the team i work for atm for example there time attack cars they will use the biggest coolant pipe they can to improve flow rate ect were as an F1 or WRC team would calculate the flow rate and get the best possible diameter pipe to do the job and be supper accurate the team i work for now wouldn't be able to do the complex calculations needed for the top levels of racing

I did a motorsport engineering course at Northbrook. It was alrite at first but it was shit in all. They made the course sound so good at first then once you had signed up you moswell of just been on the mechanics course. If you didn't arse lick the tutor he would exclude you and all he ever went on about was his project. Also if you didn't like the taste of poo then you never went out with the cars on the limited track time they booked out. And looking at the photos of the events the tutor just did the work anyway. And when exam time came. The tutor sat an exam for one of my mates and checked through 2 of mine before they were submitted. The college was a disgrace

hes right i did it at oxford brookes, safe to say i gave it up after a year i didnt even take the exams it was SHITTTTT, i spent all of a couple hours out the year ACTUALLY working on cars, but the course is about designing parts for cars so you do need to know all the stresses and strains certain parts will suffer so you do need to be good and physics and maths, so many people gave it up/started the first year again, but a fair few did alright and are happily going on their work placements this year, i dont wanna put you off but its not fun at all, since ive changed my course im much happier at uni
