On my standard VTS if giving it some sprightly runs the oil temp will creep up to the middle of the middle line and max temp. Is this a problem with the engine or a standard thing?

This appears to be quite a common problem with the VTS, and mine does this too. The main thing is to realise that these gauges are only a rough indication of the temperature, and not 100% accurate.
However, if you want to be on the safe-side, then you can purchase a mocal oil cooler kit (can find them on Ebay etc). You would need to get one with a thermostat, so that the oil is only fed through the oil cooler when the temperature has risen too high.

Ive read it can be a problem and I think I will get an oil cooler, just didnt want the cooler to mask the problem of a weak oil pump or something.

What do you mean by middle of the middle line?
Mine sits at 1/2 or just under when pottering around. Goes up towards 3/4 when pressing on - perfectly normal. You only want to worry when it starts reaching the top/ putting the light on. You might have a faulty oil temp sensor if the gauge seems to fluctuate quite a lot.
IIRC, a lad on Rallye Register wired in an accurate probe to measure his oil temp on track with an aftermarket oil cooler. His conclusion was the aftermarket ones are total overkill unless you've got a boosted/ high spec engine. 106 GTIs never came with the oil cooler/ heat exchanger (at least the early ones didn't), so the standard VTS one will be doing more than enough to keep it cool.

Middle of the middle line and max temp, or 3/4 of the way up.

If your working the engine hard, that temp is fine - nothing to worry about. :)
