what sort of things would i have to do to get decent or big power out of a n/a vtr silver top :y:

Exhuast system, Airfilter, Plugs/Leads, Cams, uprated fuel pump/filter/regulator, give the engine a good service... will see some decent power gains... if you know what your doing Ported and polished throttle bodies make a fair difference, get it mapped, adjustable pulleys are good if you know what your doing

Bigger budget... turbo it.. maybe get a S engine with a turbo/charger

Define "decent power". Just get a cammed 16v.

yer i would cam a 16v but you dont realy see many fast road vtr's

And there is a good reason for that. It's easier with a 16v. Could turbo it if you have some dosh. A few guys on here have done it, wide_vtr_turbo is one.

> Decat Exhaust system, induction kit, 4-2-1 manifold
> Cams, adjustable pulley, ported and polished head, lightend flywheel, good remap

The above COULD probably put you at about 130bhp and make a very quick VTR :)

Its easier with a S engine tbf mate.. say u spend £800 for example on tuning ur R to say 120/130bhp... You could get an S engine install for that and have change thn u will have that power there before any work

im in the same boat too, got a pipercross straight through pipe on my vtr, and sold my old pipe, but the straight through pipe has lost me some performance for some reason :S. Id like to get a vts lump to be fitted, just finding a decent vtr lump?....

Its not just the extra 20hp, its the power/torque curves, the vts engine is simply better.
If you must keep the 8v id suggest changing the box to a shorter one (rallye/xsi mabie)

i thought about doing this o my mk2 vtr but when you look at the results u get and look at a standard vts it just dont make sence
i looked into it and know from selling a few bits im doing what my mrs called a "vts fund" i love my little vtr but the amount of money you spend to get vts standard power is silly and then all you need is a mate to cam his vts and your at the back again lol dont get me wrong you will have a quick vtr but thats all you will have in the end
im opting for the save as much as i can untill january sell my car and then buy a vts just think about it mate you could get 160-170bhp max from a vts thats 30-40 more! is up to you tho

cheers

this is what i have done intill ive saved enough money to get the S engine.
i fitted a 1.1 box and noticed some much difference like changing from 2nd to 3rd is so smooth its like its the same gear just hit a torque curv i love it.

iv just got a vtr and am also looking for more power, hiflow heads are sellling competion heads on their site ive seen the vtr 130 bhp apackage for about £1200. if i was to buy this would i be able to to get the same performance as a vts or would they still wipe me out? i do like the vtr but after having a 106 gti i crave having that power back but trying to avoid the 16v conversion if possibe due to insurence so would this comp head and breathing mods do the trick .

Its all good saying no point tuning the Vtr and just drop a Vts lump in.

But why even waste time doing that when Vts's can be had cheap enough anyway. And surely an engine converted Vtr will be more expensive to insure than a Vts with the engine fitted from factory.

Just buy a Vts.

wrong a vts conversion in a vtr is way cheaper insurance than a std vts because most insurance companys dont recognise the engine to be a 16v its just another 1.6 so its all good.

because a family member gave me their vtr thats only covered 40k from new last week he 62 and had it from new and i no full well it hasnt been hammered with 4 or 5 + owners as where most vts have so i was trying to get the same power as a standard vts by using the engine i have as it runs like new wiyh no problems and wasnt gonna say owt to insurence for the sake of a stage 3 head it not as if iv put a 16v engine in it.

Until you crash.

Or if they have half a brain they would click on.

Why dont they recognise the car model when doing quotes??We had this bother on the Vtr.Done a quote online then called up to take out the policy. When the GF told them it was a Vtr they were like oooohhh we will need to adjust your quote as it will be more. Was like WTF is should have came up when we put the reg in.
Still got it for the price quoted in the 1st place though.

nope if your honest and tell them that its a 16v vts engine you have put in the cat 9 times out of 10 the car will be cheaper to insure than a standard form vts who knows why?

and at the end of the day mate its your car you build it how you want to build it you want to keep the vtr you keep it nothing wrong with a vtr there loads of fun and really easy to work on. and you can get the 120 ish mark with modifications but as every one said it costs a little more than a vts conversion but if thats what you want i would do that.

depends how you like your power, low end torque/power of an 8 valve (boosted 8vs are very impressive low down the rev range) or the high end peak power of a 16v

I have a soon to be fully rebuilt VTR engine mapped ECU and loom available soon for about £500, beat all the 16V cars in last years British Rallycross stockhatch championship. A genuine stockhatch legal 130 bhp.

you will get a lower top end speed but good on acceleration.
