i have just brought a new idle control valve for the vtr, made doubley sure it was the right one of course. I have just fitted it and when I started the engine the revs just shot straight up and of course I switched off the engine straight away, i then turned the key on and off several times as I read that something may need to adjust and its still doing it :wall: any ideas on what to do next?

Its not sealed properly mate. Take it out and put the o ring in the hole first then push your icv back in and it will seal right.

Rubber seal that goes in when you put it back together. If youdidnt take old one out iya either double sealed or you have no seal.

Make sure the old one came out. If you have dubbel O Rings it can leak.

iirc you need to turn the ignition to the second click then off a few times so it can recalibrate itself.

Try pushing the plunger of the ICV all the way in before you fit it.
As Alex has said, you need to turn the ignition on for a few seconds, then turn everything off completely and wait a few seconds - keep doing this until you hear what sounds like a rattling noise from under the bonnet (when everything is off). You've probably heard the noise before when you've had the engine running and you turn it off.

Happens all the time when people replace these. Before starting the car you MUST do the following for it to idle correctly as it is a new valve and it needs initializing/priming:
1) Install new ICV and connect
2) Turn ignition on, leave on for 10 seconds, turn ingnition off.
-Repeat above step (2) 10 times.
3) Start car.
The reason it revs so high is when its first installed its wound all the way out on the stepper motor. Therefore, it's leaving a big gap to let air through. By doing the steps above it is setting itself to the correct position. It probably only needs the "Ignition on/off" step 3 times but Citroen recommend 10 times to be on safe side.

i tried it again today and followed the steps above, in the end had to turn the ignition on and off around 20 times lol but now starts up and runs well, however when I rev it to around 2000-3000 rpm when stationary it revs stay where they are. any ideas on this or does it just need working in? Many thanks.

Sounds like it may be sticking mate. Maybe check connection is all the way in and make sure it hasn't gone in on the wonk.
