View Full Version : 1.4 engine swap mk1 to mk2

hi all,

First post here and i'm in need of help.

I bought a '99 westcoast very cheaply with the intetion of swapping in another engine, the bearings were completely ruined in it.

To replace it i bought a decent '01 furio engine planning to use only the head and block, and carrying everything else over from the westcoast.

Apart from the bearings the westcoast engine ran fine, inlcuding all the usually suspect sensors and ICV.

The furio engine is now in the car with all electricals, sensors, intake, fueling, exhaust and flywheel (it was in better condition) from the mk1 engine. But it won't run properly, it missfires and won't idle unless the throttle is opened. It runs smoothly when increasing the revs.

As far as i could tell before buying the engine, the only difference between the mk1 and mk2 blocks/heads was the tappets? i haven't had a chance to check for air leaks yet which is a likley cause, but is there anything else that would stop it running properly?

Any help is much appreciated, i need the car for work!!

(sorry for the massive first post )

later 1.4 engines, i think the ones with cat in the downpipe, had different port spacings on the head

Is that inlet or exhaust ports? or both?

if it's inlet that would create a massive air leak and possibly explain it.

inlet side is different, didn't even think you'd manage to bolt the manifold up without it being glaringly obviously wrong though

you're right, can't believe how different it is and i'm amazed it even ran.

When i put it together i assumed it was the same and just whacked it straight on.

I'm going to use the mk2 inlet manifold with the sensors swapped (keeping the mk2 IVC though) and hopefully it should be fine.

cheers for the help.
