Saxo 1.0 First VTR engine swap?

Hi

Im very new to the whole saxo experience, im 20 and have had a whole range of cars but have decided to settle down with a 2000 saxo.
At the moment the 1.0 engine is rather pathetic and i have been offered a VTR engine for £50 complete with gearbox, loom, ecu everything i need.
Im not sure wether its a mk 1 or 2 engine how can i find out from just the engine?
Which engine do i need that will simply go straight in, im not bothered about having to mess around with anything as im very used to changing engines in other cars.
All im after is a bit more power for everyday driving and it just so happens this vtr engine is next door to me.

Can anyone help me with this please?

Hey mate,
Welcome I got a 1.0 Saxo too as my daily.

£50 seems good, a VTR engine will make a big difference in a 1.0 shell (assuming its like mine non sunroof no pas no electric windows)

Mk1 will be single plug loom and the type of inlet manifold.
Mk2 will be three plug.

It will be pretty straight forward I think.

do you know which engine i need? mine is a W plate, does that make it a mk2?

Won't really make a difference, but I think you need to weld in a engine mount for the vtr into 1.0 & 1.1 shells!?

With yours being a w reg you need a specific engine and loom, it's not as straight forward as mk1 or mk2. Early mk2s on a v/w/x reg used a hybrid of the mk1 and 2 loom and a mk1 ecu. You need what's referred to as a crossover engine/loom

as leem said youve got the dreaded cross over engine lol i think you can use the loom the engine comes with but will have to splice your multiplug connector on to it from your original loom iirc

and i think you will have to use the 1.0 engine mount under the ecu, as if you wanna use the vtr mount you need to weld on a vtr mount cradle, my mate had a 16v engine in his 1.1 by using his 1.1 mount

I should have a vtr crossove loom for sale soon, will go straight on a mk1 engine, will have to change a few things on a mk2 tho

so basically the multiplug that runs the rest of hte car is different, and i need to wire my original plug onto the wiring that goes to the vtr plug after cutting it off? will the wires be the same colours or is it going to be a nightmare?

If its going to be a nightmare, what will the best engine swap option be?

just been out and checked the ecu, its got a Bosch MA 3.1 single plug ecu on the left side of the engine bay

I'd buy it for £50 and sell it on, gearbox alone is worth more than that. Use the money to buythe right engine (that I'm selling ;))

From a v/w/x reg with the crossover loom, everything right and it's a plug and play conversion, bolt the engine in and plug it in no messing and it'll run straight away

also may i ask a very stupid question, but im not used to working with ecu's as im more of a carb/diesel injection pump person. The multiplug that you guys mention, am i right in asking if thats the plug that goes to the ecu, and another stupid question im sure but, how does the main car wiring loom attach to the engine/ecu wiring loom?

The multiplug attaches the engine loom to the interior loom behind the passenger headlight.
