Im helping two of my mates strip out and prep a focus for auto tests at the moment, the one lad is in college and has been for about 5 months now doing motor vehical maintaince. I asked him for a ratchet with a torx fitment on it expecting the usual what a torx, however when he asked whats a rachet i was surprised. I then went to pick him up from college and the subject they were talking about was how to link their turbos to their batterys. These are the future people that will be fixing peoples brakes and MOTing cars in the future :panic:
cool story bro i know

A lad I know is a second year motor vehicle mechanic, he phoned me up saying he thinks there's something wrong with the car he bought the day before, I found this strange bearing in mind I have no qualifications relating to cars or mechanics.
So I went round and said What's up, he said there's gunk coming out of the engine. I opened the oil cap, sure enough full of mayo. I told him the head gasket is gone, to which I was asked What's a head gasket, how much does it cost and is it easy to fit. After I explained to him its a royal pain in the arse he asked me if it would be ok to leave it if he 'didnt rag It till its warm'

Not at all. Most people do mechanics as it is a passion, you wouldnt do it if you didnt have a love for cars. Basicly you are saying im dumb as i done a year at college after i left school now im doing mechanical engineering apprenticeship. Id hardly say its a job for semi intelligent people..

I did basic mechanics when I was at school, did work experience in a local garage and didn't go on to do mechanics purely for the reason how stupid the people are. I saw one mechanic break an airbox on some car and tape it back together...
Now I do pretty much everything to my car myself only thing is MOT which is obvious why lol.

i have just recently left college due to change in career plan ect and i did nearly 2 years of it and i can gladly say 95% of the car related stuff i know is from doing it at home or with mates ect and only 5% was learnt at college as i dont think they teach you fuck all they teach you how do do cambelt changes and services and brakes , suspension and how to diagnose problems ect ect but to be fair all of the stuff we did i knew how to do as its quite easy to do stuff on cars if you dont know how to do it follow a guide how to take it slow and dont rush and everything 9 times out of ten is perfectly fine like i did one year of it my first year and i said to my tutor can we change a headgasket and time back up and everything he says no so i go home that weekend get a mate round who knows nothing at all hes a carpenter and we did it in a day a very long day but we did it and my car still runs to this day so i didnt fuck it up lol goes to prove that you dont need to be a mechanic to do 95% of the jobs and the future of people fixing cars well there isnt going to be one in 20 years time if a head gasket goes then a brand new engine will be put it engines wont be fixed and if they are they will be made so you can wirelessly connect a laptop and fix anything cars will be come just a thing thats not fixed or done by robots as they will be cheaper lol

Must just be that college...im on level one (dont know why lol) and they are starting from the basics...again i have no idea why im on level one lol, im lowering torsion bars and doing engine conversions without any colege course...but you know...and the people on there are dumb as hell, but since ive started...they all know what a ratchet is...lol and a trow for that matter...a guy when i 1st started, i asked him, whats this (it was a spark plug) but to him it was a piston :/...he was a birght spark ;) no pun intented lol...so my college must be ok if people like that are learning stuff ha

Fortunately, im doing my apprenticeship with Alfa Romeo, So they guys i work with aren't stupid, but people who ask what a head gasket is shouldnt be working on cars lol. To be quite honest, You have be quite a clever person to make a career out of it, because there is a hell of alot to learn! :)

this is what i meant, there are alot of idiots that do mechanics due to being easy to get on and chavs like cars, this doesnt mean everyone that does it for a living is stupid as reputation is big in that business and if your fucking stupid then you wont last long, plus the proper money is in more specialised areas rather than kwik fit tyre changes and services..

my mechanic friend, is studying mechanics...but he is a mechaninc.
i once read a book on the law. now im a fucking cop!
just because he is studying something, doesnt mean, in any way he is qualified, or should he be expected to know the ins and outs of every fucking possible thing!
why dont you look at the sky one night, then go try to work for nasa.
everyone on this site, seems to think they are the fucking king, when it comes to handling an engine and a spanner!
atleast im not affraid to ask for advice, hints / tips on something i havnt come across before. the basic pinciples on most cars are the same, yes. but none will ever be fully identical to another!
now fancy giving my 69 bug a coolant change? dipshit!

There are a few few comments here. But still if you want to be a mechanic or training to be one you should at least know what your tools are called and the very basics.

TBH I've searched high and low for a good mechanic course, especially an evening one...the info I get back is overly retarded. Uxbridge college run a three week (one day a week...3 hours per lesson so NINE hours) which apparently will teach you (in full) how to remove car components like brakes, suspension components, THE ENGINE (?!?!?!) and exhaust parts
I find saying 9 hours of lessons to teach that INCREDIBLY hard to believe.

Yeah no problem that will be £280 based on VAG rates of £140 p/h, while we spend 2 hours looking for your drain plug.
Then upon not finding it so the parts fitted
Radiator
External water pump
Header tank
Thats another £1200 inc labour
Small problem you forgot to mention what you wanted water cooled so we piped in to the seat for you.
All in all I think 3k inc vat @20% should cover the above :fcuk:
Or did you mean Bond bug ;)

i dona a drive shaft on a members car (scrapyardcity) the other week. the day before he had taken it to a well known local garage who had fitted a shaft that turned out to be buggerd. took his wheel off an undone the hub nut that wasnt done up took out the 2 11mm nuts from the bairing carrier with my fingers and then the bolt that was supposed to hold the ball joint in that had no thread inside the nut it was a total joke not one thing they had touched was right i had never seen work this useless that is why i do all my work myself theres only one person to blame then(me)

wheres Failroader?? Suprised the master of all inventions hasn't piped up with his own special brand of hatred of mechanics/garages lol.
I only looked in by accident, and concur with most of the above. The problem with the motor trade is the law and that the garage has got you by the goolies when they posess your car. If you dispute a shoddy job they keep your car then your fucked. Most garages solve problems by a process of elimination. They order a part, no it carnt be that, they order another part, no it carnt be that, all the time the customer is paying. There are some mechanics that intuitively can zoom in on the problem but they are rare. Bollox to the lot of them.
One reason that I have kept the Saxo for so long is that I have got to know it can do every job, I get parts from the scrappy. I am beholdent to no one.
