I've had my 2000 vts for 7 months and its always had a strange whine at low revs normally between 1000 - 4000 revs, almost like its battery powered. Even does this when its in neutral so definately not gearbox. I had the cambelt, tensioners, water pump, crank pulley alternator belt and tensioner changed but its made no difference. Any ideas on what this is? This is starting to drive me a little nuts now!!!

Cheers

I doubt its the alternator.....but to check just remove the alternator belt and start the car.

belt covers touching the cam belt? or alternator ,presuming its not the cam belt overtightened

Sorry to hijack the thread but why does this happen and is it a problem that needs sorting??

Mine has been doing this just lately.....cambelt and everything has been replaced by a good garage so i know its all done spot on.

if the covers are touching the belt its definatley an issue that needs sorting, the covers hitting the belt as its spinning will cause wear to both.... wear on your cambelt isnt healthy :p

it isa an old age /heat or bad assembly problem .
its very common for belt covers to distort ,maybe cos people are to lazy to refit all the bolts ,use wrong bolts inside the cover ,or bits broken off .
new set of covers will be £70-80

Its weird though because i removed the outer cover to inspect....started it up and it was fine........replaced the cover and its still fine.

Will have to take a closer look.

Will just swap the covers tbh.....its no huge deal :y:

Tbf the cambelt has been fitted 2 years so its done like 400 miles now....must be due changing

Hope i can get an answer to this one. All belts are at the right tension so this has completely baffled me. Would the belt covers make this sort of noise then? Doesnt sound like anythings rubbing. More like a noisy bearing

thats dedication right there :y:

to the op, can you not tell in which part of the bay the noise is coming from at all?

you stated ,if i am correct that you had replaced cambelt + all tensioners --with new ones ,or other ones?
If new then its not going to be noisy bearings ,unless you have the belt so tight its like a bow string--very common mistake --If you do not have the correct tensioning tool, then always fit belt , warm up the car and see how muchtighter it becomes as the alloy head expands away from the block --then if you can play a tune on the belt --loosen it off while engine is hot --recheck when cold .then fit outer cover.
someone alrready suggested you run car with alternator belt off --it noise goes away then its the alternator ,or the tnesioner unit--after you chacked those things,it can only be the belt covers touching-maybe thecrankpulley is falling apart that the only thing left.
