View Full Version : "legality" of driving without mot and tax?

Seen a car that's literally too good to pass up for its price. No tax or test on it though. Wouldn't want to leave it where it's sat in case the fella I buy if off is a dodgy one (keeps a "lost" spare key etc)

If I was to preliminarily book an MOT, would it make the car legal to drive from point A to point B (my house) without fear of rozzers raping me? I have "drive any car 3rd party" insurance you see.

Hire a trailer locally for £35 and do it 100% legally..

Why risk your liseance for such a small amount of wonga.

EDIT: and for your 3rd party cover to be valid the vehicle cannot belong to you and HAS be be insured.

You are only allowed to drive it straight to the garage the mot is booked at.

May be better tbh to hire a car trailer if you have a friend with a tow bar?? I did the other week and it cost £40 for the day.

EDIT: Great minds think alike MiniGibbo

If you have insurance you can drive the car to a pre-booked MOT.......
DVLA may do you still for driving with no Tax - although cant see this if your going to an MOT......

If you get stopped by the filth they may check as well

Im sure it doesn't matter if you're driving to the mot station without tax as well, because you have to have a valid mot certificate to be able to tax the car

I know this Chris but sometimes theres the ANPR DVLA camera vans that automatically fine you if the vehicle aint taxed - easy get out like if your getting it MOT'd

Yeah this is true, saying that I got pulled over about 2 days after my mot and my tax disc still hadn't turned up yet, and when he checked the system hadn't been updated or something. So he said he would have to report it to the DVLA and gave me a caution and stuff, but said if you're telling me the truth nothing will come from it and it will register soon with the DVLA that you're taxed. And of course I was telling the truth, I never do anything illegal :y:

Caught driving without MOT - £60 fine.

Caught driving without Tax - £100 clamping fee, there at the roadside. (They may seize your car and have to pay a £200 surety fee, + £21 a day for storage. You then have 14 days to get tax (dunno how without a valid MOT?))

Caught driving without insurance - £200 / 6 points. (Depending on your policy, the car may or may not need to be insured in it's own right. Either way, if your driving the car off, my guess is that you are already the legally registered keeper, so your 3rd party extension wont cover you. Youd be better asking a mate or parent.)

Doesn't this only apply when the car you are driving is already insured...

Yes.

You can do what you're planning John, you do not need MOT or tax to drive to an MOT.. If your MOT and tax run out how do you get it there otherwise?

That's a fact though, you do not need either, but you do have to drive straight there and you do have to be insured and your third party drive any car clause won't cover a a car if it's not insured in it's own right.

How far away is the MOT center to your house? You got 'lost' on the way right? If not, you could book it in and go through with it (some garages will do half price MOT's), regardless of the result you are allowed to drive home, this would be completely legal.

No - not on my policy. Nothing in the policy documents. Even rang them up and checked. Been stopped in at least 5 cars without insurance in their own right, no problem. My cover is for me to drive 3rd party.

However my dad who is insured with Saga, specify it must be insured in its own right.
