Default "legality" of driving without mot and tax?

Seen a car that's literally too good to pass up for its price. No tax or test on it though. Wouldn't want to leave it where it's sat in case the fella I buy if off is a dodgy one (keeps a "lost" spare key etc)

If I was to preliminarily book an MOT, would it make the car legal to drive from point A to point B (my house) without fear of rozzers raping me? I have "drive any car 3rd party" insurance you see.
