This may sound stupid but can using the higher ovtane petrol cause the engine light to come on in mk2 saxo vtr's ?? mine did it when i filled it up with it and now a mates has done the same . is it just coincidence ?? cheers

No it wont, just go and get the fault code read anyway.

Might effect the lambda reading and changes might bring the light on.
Dont hold me to it its just a possibility...

his cat will probably be a cheap aftermarket cat and not a genuine one there prone to thrown the light on all the time, get ur code read :)

It said in writing "not to use high octane petrol" on the catalytic converter?? If no fault came up then just reset the EML...its nothing to worry about provided everything else feels fine.
