Hi
Hoping someone can help me!
I bought a VTR recently, 51 plate, 68k mileage and the lad who I got it off said he recently changed the gearbox but nothing else.
I took it to dual carriage way to open her up and as soon as I get to about 40mph and then put my foot down on the accelerator wether in 5th gear or drop to a lower gearer to get some more power the car just revs really high and I just stay at 40mph and then the revs drop straight back to were it was and the car speed SLOWLY climbs.
It seems to be ok when driving it calmly on 30mph roads and only starts with the problem when I am tryiing to drive her faster.
The lad who sold it me reckons he has never noticed!
My cousin said it sounds like my clutch is slipping, does anyone agree with this? and does this mean i need a new clutch? or could it have been something he has done when fitting the new gearbox
PLEASE HELP!!!!

Yeah, I know how it feels to be ripped off mate. At the end of the day its about money rather than anything else. Hope you get the clutch sorted though.

got cousin who owns his own garage but he does bodywork and alloy refurbishment and hasnt got the time to do it himself, he said he does know someone who can do it for £100 but thats about the amount a garage would charge anyway isnt it?

A garage would charge around £40 an hour, it'll take around 2 hours to change it.
If you get all the parts that is, oil, Clutch Kit, Bearing etc...

100 pound labour charge isnt too bad to be honest :y:

I just paid just under £200 for my clutch to be done. Was a LUK clutch kit with a new release fork and gearbox oil flush and change. the prices don't seem that bad for you

not being that clued up on clutches I am a bit confused, I thought I would just need to buy a clutch kit and it came with bearings but do i have to buy the bearings seperately?
RustySkull
2nd May 2011, 20:09
You'll get the bearing, but not the sleeve, if the sleeve is fucked you'll need a new one of them :)

soz for all the questions but I wanna get clutch kit ordered 2mora you see.
I'm i best just ordering the Valeo clutch kit for now and then speaking to a garage to fit it and if theres anything else wrong then they would supply other parts and charge me?
RustySkull
2nd May 2011, 20:18
Yeh just order a kit, any other parts you can sort out later :)
If the bearing isn't making any noises then the sleeve should be fine anyway :D

2nd May 2011, 20:28
i havent noticed any noises that sound unsual lol
What type of noise would it be?
I am guessing the garage will provide the oil?
Was gona order a QH clutch for £70 but everyone seems to recommend a Valeo one so gona get that one ordered 2mora and then hopefully find a cheap garage (heres hoping). :o)

nah its def not making any sounds like that!
I was just reading a similar thread about someone having similar probs and they were advised to change the release bearing?? do I need to do this aswell if I am changing the whole clutch?
RustySkull
2nd May 2011, 20:44
That's what I mean will be making the noise, the Release bearing.
You should get one with the kit, I did anyway.
But it is a good plan to change it while it's apart ye.

When you order the kit, make sure it comes with a bearing, if not, order one at the same time. :)

It doesnt actually say if it comes with a bearing but in the product specification theres a bit that says "Bearing - 18 splines", so I am guessing this would indicate it comes with a bearing? The picture shows 3 parts.

yeah cheers for your advice and help.
Just gotta get new radiator sorted now and then 'hopefully' there shouldn't be any more probs lol
Gona be brave though this time and try and do radiator myself, I am hoping its gona be easy to do, just bit unsure about bleeding part
RustySkull
6th May 2011, 13:42
It's a 10min job mate.
Bleeding is simple, just make sure it's bled before you drive it lol.

quick question,
do mk1 and mk2 vtrs have the same type and size of radiator? just that I seen several suppliers advertising some rads that state there for vtrs but they have different 'core' sizes to each other?
also i have seens rads for like £30 and then £70, now I know when it comes to clutches, gearboxs etc that dearer tends to be better but is that the same case for rads?
RustySkull
6th May 2011, 14:03
Mk1's have a sensor in the rad under the top hose and MK2's don't.
Most new Rads come with a Bung you can use to bung the hole if you don't have the sensor.
And the price is due to the make, I have a Nissens duel core VTS rad in my VTR, was £130 but it's just bigger lol.
blackpool_vtr
6th May 2011, 16:06
Thats what I am getting confused with, can bigger rads go in my car or would i need to modify were it sits?
Because I have seen a vtr rad that says its 390mm x 297mm x 22mm and also a vtr rad that is 530mm x 297mm x 24mm and I didn't know which size I should be ordering?
soz to be a pain but I just wanna make sure I get right one
RustySkull
6th May 2011, 18:45
It'll fit lol VTS and VTR are the same car. If you look there's holes and mounting places on your Slam Panel :)
You just have to move the hangers along :)
blackpool_vtr
6th May 2011, 18:59
Cheers for that!
In which case am I best getting the bigger radiator? will it be better at cooling?
Alsooooooooooo whilst I am being such a pain and pestering you, don't suppose you saw my new thread did you? about the whooshing sound?
Basically I have noticed that when I first start the engine there is a swooshing sound of liquid behind the dashboard that goes after a few seconds, I am now worried as I have looked on here for people experiencing a similar sound and most of the people have said its the head gasket on its way out and only a very few have said its caused by air in the system and not the gasket.
Is it more then likely that in my case its just air getting in the system caused by leak in radiator and low coolant?
The car has done 68k
Cheers bud :)
RustySkull
6th May 2011, 19:04
Haha, you can ask as many questions as you like buddy :)
And yes, it'll 90% be due to air in the system, put your new Rad in and bleed it with BOTH nipples starting with the heater nipple first, then to the thermostat nipple. then back to the heater to make sure, then make sure the coolant is present.
As for the Rad, yeh bigger the better :)
As long as you get a VTR/VTS 106 Rad it'll fit fine. Although make sure you get one with a Cap as they often have different Caps to what you already have. :)

Cheers pal, you been a really big help and put my mind at rest! :) (apart from that missing 10% regarding whooshing sound lmao)
I will let you know how I get on
once again cheers

p.s.
do you know how much it is to roughly fit a head gasket anyway? cos I heard you should change them around the 75k mark?
I looked on ebay and saw a head gasket set for £35 brand new, are there easy to do ya self? lol
RustySkull
6th May 2011, 20:04
Yeh they're easy mate.
Only change it if it needs it really :)
