I'm replacing the cambelt on a 1.4 8 valve Furio. The tensioner has a spring mechanism built in. Ass supplied the new tensioner has tension on the spring and a pin through the back plate to hold the tension. To my eye it seems that when fitted I need to turn the tensioner clockwise to take the tension off the spring before I pull the pin. The Haynes manual doesn't cover this type of tensioner and says you have to turn the tensioner anti-clockwise to tension the belt.
Any comments from knowledgeable folk out there appreciated.

Supplementary question - I'm guessing the spring is there to maintain the correct tension in the belt, so that all talk of tension gauges is superfluous. True?

Yes, the spring maintains the tension.

When you bought the cambelt kit you should of had some destructions in the box.

You need to setup the tensioner as instructed, and then rotate the engine for it to set itself.

Not 100% you have the same kit as what i used on my 1.4, but mine, i turned the tensioner clockwise to tension the belt, then when it was at correct tension, hold it there, and torque the bolt up to hold it in place.

I used an alan key to turn the tensioner.

Thanks for the replies.
There were no instructions with the cambelt kit. That would have made it too easy.
Thanks too for the confirmation that clockwise is the way to go.

The later 1.4 has the spring tensioner, the earlier one needs an 8mm square drive.
