i had a quick search but couldnt find an answer to my questions. what is the point in a mocal oil cooler (apart from the obvious) why would you need 1, doesnt the engine cool the oil standard and also, how is one of these installled???

its not really needed unless modidfied with a charger of some sort which will generally make it run alot hotter
or on track/race cars which will be gtting alot more abuse thus be hotter,
fitted where your oil filter locates, screw on there and filter goes onto that, bang the cooler in somewhere itll get air flow, sling your lines on and your away

so its not very exspensive tbh and its real simple to install, so say on a vts with bmc cda direct feed, 4-2-1, and full exhaust system and plus a set of newman ph3 cams would you say it would be worth me getting one???
All on a vts

the vts has a basic oil cooler as standard m8, which is fine for everyday use.
it wont hurt to change to a 10 row mocal cooler with a thermostatic take off plate,
but it wont make much difference either unless abusing the car.

Right ok, cheers for the info adz and blackie, think I might get one on an s cus they do look nice mounted on the rad, and if it helps it run slightly cooler might aswell :)

Remember that too cool is bad for an engine!

Make sure you get a thermostatic sandwich plate
Without itll overcool massively and youll be in a whole mess trust me i had one without previously
tbh mine doesnt get that hot anyway daily on a good thrash revving to 8k every gear yea it warms up but its sustained periods that kill it ie long track sessions and sitting at silly speed on motorways (autobahns to germany i allmost overheated my old gti as they dont have the cooler)

Alex with the Sandwich plate can you then choose when it kicks in etc or will it still just constainly run?

Think they are designed to kick in @ 80 degrees C

Agreed, They open fully at a certain oil temperature, there's no choice about it.

Usually 89 iirc i foget but it shuts off the cooler below that so it wont overcool

Wicked so no risk of over cooling on day to day basis but then will kick in when over heating thru thrashing etc :)

exactly fella
it opens when the oil gets over a preset temp and then cools when it goes back under it closes again to keep the temp up

I was told it would be a good addition when I got my car cammed. Ive bought one and not even fitted it
Car sits at normal temperature, and even after a little heavy foot action its not much warmer, so I think its more of a looking pretty thing. Just my opinion though

ive always been lead to believe thermostats never work on them and as a reslt shouldonly be really fitted if you NEED an oil cooler, my turbo set up doesnt evenhave one, got a brand new oil cooler kit.... just waited to see how it drove, gets warm on thrashing but never too warm.... dont see the point on a mildly tuned vts tbh

they never really fully shut is the issue with them so they dont work great but they definatly slow the flow enough to work and keep a reasonable temp
i wouldnt fit one on anything unless the temp guage was getting high though on hard drives tbh

absolutely no point on a mildly tuned vts. the only time i've got the oil hot to the point where i've needed my oil cooler has been on track.
i ran mine n/a with cams and stand alone for 2 years with frequent track use and never needed an oil cooler.
