Right, as you can see from the pics i have mostly built the engine, the crankshaft will rotate about 3/4 of a turn either way but when i follow the haynes manual it wont rotate more than that, can anyone see what ive done wrong?

If i were you i'd check the timing using something to lock the flywheel and the cams. Not just the marks on the belt.

Looks to me as though the inlet cam and exhaust cam are the wrong way around. The pulley slots are at different angles. DO NOT TURN IT!!
There was a lad a while back on SSC I think it was, had Catcams that were labelled the wrong way around and I identified that as the problem. Once corrected it was fine.

i did what haynes said, locked the crank at tdc on the flywheel side, rotated the cam sprocket clockwise by hand tightened the sprockets up, tensioned the tensioner and tried to rotate, but after 1/2 - 3/4 of a turn its solid.

I looked everywhere to make sure i had them the right way around but just couldent find and answers lol, as it is i think the exhaust cam has 00 stamped on it and the inlet cam has 99 stamped on it.

I've just checked a standard head and when the pulleys are on the dowels, the lobes nearest the pulleys should point away from each other, pretty much horizontal. Swap the cams and on the dowels it looks likes yours. The head has lumps cast in it to prevent them being swapped, but they may have been ground away?

They may have been im not sure, i know ive not done it lol, ill swap them over tomorrow and see if its better, any chance they could be aftermarket camshafts??

Are standard ones stamped with any id marks?

have just looked at some pics i took when i first took the engine apart and it does show the cam lobes at opposites to each other like you said, so that is my problem, DOH!!

Hopefully, if you haven't leant on it too hard and tipped valves... it'll all be fine.

No, the crank just slipped on the belt thankfully.

Just out of curiosity, how hard is too hard? This serves me right for rushing it, don't know whether it's worth taking head off and checking? :s

Can't really say, doesn't take much effort to bend 6mm stem valves! A compression check might be an idea first.
