mate of mine has a 1.1 106 and the other day coming home from the beach his car made a loud pop and hissing then stopped and drove fine then as we got into his street did it again do we pulled up and checked the usual , oil water etc. then it started knocking like hell so he limped it to the nearest garage who said gearbox is on its last legs, so he ordered a recon box and new clutch and took his car to a gearbox speicialist to be fitted who rang him 4 hours later saying that the timingbelt has snapped but your gearbox and clutch are fine , will the garage have to pay for engine repairs seems they were the ones who broke the belt ?

It's not their fault because you can't prove anything...

Are they not just pointing out that the problem was the timing belt and not the gearbox/clutch?

no they dont no what the knocking noise was they said the gearbox and clutch was fine but he couldnt select 3 or R gear and he can sort of prove they broke the belt because he drove the car there and the belt obviously wasnt snapped while he was driving it. oh they said there goin to strip[ the engine to checkthe belt snapping hasnt broke anything important

it's pretty poorly written by the OP, but from my understanding:

first garage was where he limped the car to, they told him gearbox was gone.

second garage was where he took the car to be fixed, the garage said gearbox was fine, but timing belt snapped.

you couldn't have driven from one garage to the next with a broken timing belt, so i assume he means the second garage broke it.

How they broke it whilst checking / fitting a gearbox is confusing though.

Without more input from the OP it seems pretty hard to prove legally that the timing belt snapped because of either garage.

If theyre going to check the engine over, then whats the problem?

unless youre concerned your mate will get the bill for it...

I see, either way he needs to pay to get it fixed.

A belt can snap at any time though........seriously cant blame the garage for your friends poor maintenance.

If he's a mechanic, surely he could have fitted a gearbox? or got someone within the place he works to fit one?

I don't see how a gearbox place could have snapped the belt. I Also dont't see how it could have snapped under its own doings if he has maintained it properly. Something doesn't add up.

wondering how do you get back to the garage with a snapped belt.

Knocking must have been the bottom end? Seized up and ripped off the belt on its way out? Maybe.

He hasn't got a leg to stand on

The garage didn't snap the belt, it snapped itself.

As Dom said above, chances are that the knocking was just the start of the issues and the belt eventually snapped either just before or when it got to the garage.

They could have started the engine and the belt just snapped there any then, unlikely but possible, especially if the engine had issues leading up to it.

Either way, unless he plans to take a garage to court with his own money and risk losing, he will just have to pay for the repairs out of his own pocket

Same here, pretty simple job. If hes a trainee mechanic lash a new engine in. Another simple job and will get an engine for about £50, he can also give himself a new gearbox and cambelt whilst at it.
