View Full Version : would a compression test show a leaking head gasket or a crack in the block/head?

as the title says lol just trying to rule out head gasket failure/cracked head or block for reason there is oil in my coolant.

Smell the expansion tank if it smells of petrol fumes the gaskets gone, or you can take it to a garage to do a block test on it, compression check will just check the compression in the cylinders and won't rule anything out

its hard to say what it smells of lol, smells oily/rank lol. its a new headgasket but suppose something could of gone wrong fitting it lol

Lol, could have was it done at a garage?

umm, it was done in my garage lol. suppose i better try again, the head was skimmed and block faced before fitting it tho

Did you torque the head properly?
boony

get a sniff test done

low compression could be a number of things, head gasket gone (even if new), bolt not down tight enough, valves not seating (should be done if head gasket replaced), washed bores (over fueling), and other things

follwed haynes exactly, how would you have done it?

did you buy new head bolts aswell as head gasket?
Head bolts stretch when they are tightened this is why they should be replaced when a new head gasket is put on because they wont tighten down properly, also as said in previous comment best re seating the valves too so you get proper compression and no leaks.
Had a few brandi's so if my spellin is bad sorry lol :D

new head bolts and gasket were bought from eurocarparts. head was skimmed valves ground and rebuilt at a local engine shop (scholar engines).

done as said, torque bolts up in order then angle tighten 270°
petrolhead_19
6th September 2011, 00:17
what compression are you getting on all cylinders? is it about even or way out?
only other thing i could think is worn piston rings or washed bores if your getting shit compression

Did you use an angle meter?

not done one yet, only got tester today. would leaking head gasket cause excess pressure in radiator? as whenever i park tge car up it blows oily crap out of the small hole near the rad cap. even when its below the max level
Deano_Blad

yes used an angle meter

Yeah a lot of pressure can be a symptom does it build a lot of pressure after only being ran for a few minutes?

only red cap i can think of is the fuel cut off switch is this the one your on about?
excess pressure in radiator could be a stuck thermostat
Deano_Blad
6th September 2011, 00:28
says rad cap mate lol, cant see it being thermostat, all pipes heat up as they should, yeahh like 2 mins and clear water comes out, another few mins its gunky shit lol

Id definitely be thinking head gasket problem tbh mate take it to a garage to do a block test basically just tests the fumes in the water to see if theres any exhaust gases in there

oh haha i thought you said red cap lol (well i did say i been drinking), does sound like something has gone wrong when fitting the head gasket mate, only problem is if you take it apart to check it then gonna have to replkace head gasket and bolts again :(
Could of been a dodgy gasket from the place you got it, i have had a couple before now

and if there is fumes definatly head gasket? lol
Deano_Blad
6th September 2011, 00:37
yeahh, but only looking at 60 quid plus fitting. want to sell it but not cuntish enough to palm it off with suspected hg probs lol

head gasket was a reinz one iirc

Compression test will show if there any problem with the cyl.
If there a crack on the coolent system it will not show that.
Do a compression test see if they are all the same in all four cly that more inportant than the compression itself.
If that Ok then maybe a leak down test. See if a cly is leaking of any sorts.
Do the compression test and come back with the results of that. Should be even across the board.

I pressurized the system as just a test with the head gasket at only 20nm, it was easily enough to hold back water and oil. The torquing is for the fire rings. I'd have the block checked for cracks and the head if you havent already?
One thing to bare in mind though it will need a lot of flushing, even if a bit of oil gets into the system!

took plugs out and cylinder 4 plug is clean, 3 and 1 have a little bit of oil and plug 2 is covered in oil lol.

Oil on the plugs(correct me if i`m wrong)is the valve stem seals.Did you lap the valves in & clean the face of the valve?
Deano_Blad
6th September 2011, 12:45
valves were lapped and cleaned with new oil stem seals fitted, no white smoke in exhaust tho

6th September 2011, 12:56
Oil could be stem seals piston rings or gasket, is guess at the head gaskets as its in the water too

phoned up local garage and after trying what he said looks like a head gasket would of been useless. took off oil filter, took off OIL COOLER, put oil cooler in bucket plugged one end, blew air down the other to admire my lovely bucket jacuzzi lol. oil cooler had a fucking hole in it lol.
