i have a 98 vtr mk1 and ive got 17" wheels on it, im thinking of getting a shorter ratio gearbox. maybe a 1.1 or a rallye s1 box, i know im gonna get better acceleration and lose top end but do you think its worth it if im on 17's?

im also thinking of replacing my piperX open filter with a BMC CDA.

I should say if you are wanting better performance, lose the 17's there for looks only, get some 15's, or 14's with lower profile

ok so if i were to lose the 17's i know it'd be quicker still but i already know that. i want to know if i KEEP the 17's and were to get the s1 box for example would this still provide a noticable gain?

...although i may consider loosing the 17's later.

having larger wheels on your car puts your gear box under excess stress, you can put the s1 rally box in which would increase acceleration a bit but you would see more of an icrease on stadard 14" vtr wheels

thats the only thing im worried about, i know im going to get an increase in acceleration, i just wanted to know if the gain will be noticeable on 17's and if i would be risking 'seriously' damaging the gearbox.

ok after reading some of the other posts about this topic ive decided im gonna get a 1.1 gear box...or an s1 rallye if i can find one!!
how much should i be looking at paying for a 1.1 gearbox?..and can it handle the stress of 17's if it has to?

all MA gearboxes are the same strength. not just a case of damaging the gearbox with 17's, your wheel bearings, driveshafts and suspension bushes will fail before the 'box does (unless you're silly low) :) get a 1.1 box for between 50-100 from a scrappy.
