Used to like Nova GTE's, but never liked Corsas.
Apparently the 16vs are ok, but theyre never going to set a road or track alight.

Nice mate, Very capable engines and nice handling cars if they're set up right. If you've got a spare 10 grand lieing around, Send your engine to John reid and he'll get 250bhp+ out of it.
I doubt many of the haters on here will like it mind.

My mate has a really tidy looking one, well he's sold it to my other mate now lol.
Don't see many i like though.. never driven one either.

Oh and for Corsa info and general banter, sign up to corsasport.co.uk.
Awesome site, probably more active than here with not so much X vs Y threads or what car next shite.

I used to have a n/a 250bhp 2.1 16v corsa b a few yrs back, it was a rocket!
I attended a corsa - saxo thing at Brunters that redline mag organised and beat everyone lol.
With your 1.6 16v get a set of TB's on there as the std inlet set up is very restrictive.

didn't adam (ak) have similar car or is it the same one?
As for performance c20let is best value for money but some people swear by small block handling so its up to you what route to take.

AK had a different car. Their's a clip of my corsa on you tube somewhere.
My 2.1 handled just fine, leda ftw. ;)
Mieran
4th October 2011, 21:30
leda don't exist anymore, apparently most of their staff work for gaz now
I prefer the handling on Novas compared to corsa Bs tbh, even though they're almost identical underneath
easier to get a good corsa b these days though and can do things to them that aren't as easy on novas, like fitting a f28 or whiteline rarb

They did 10-11 years ago when i had the Corsa though. :y:
The Nova is alot lighter but narrower so easier to get up onto 2 wheels with sticky tyres fitted.

There was an epic one at Rally Day at Combe a few weeks back - over taking a Millington engined Escort mk2 on the outside is pretty good going. I have no idea of the engine spec though but it was on bodies and have the cage triangulating down into the shock turrents at both ends

i do like them, parts are simple to find. they are simple to work on really!

You can't beat a cheeky XE corsa.
Personally though, i prefer to use a mk3 astra as a redtop base. no messing around with shafts/mounts etc.
Just bolt it in and they're equally as quick as a corsa redtop somehow.
Mine standard coilpack redtop did a 15 second dead quarter at 97mph. Although, on the same run i got beat by a diesel mk4 golf! :@

i test drove a 1.0 corsa once... hated it, but of course it might just have been fucked :) have fun with it :)

They aren't as quick.
Stick both side by side with a healthy XE in them and the Corsa will trounce it.
I would and still crave another clean P1 Mk3 Astra Gsi C20XE.
Very hard to come by nowadays though.

They definitely are as quick. Stick an XE in an astra merit and it will stick with any corsa redtop.
I used to own a ph1 gsi. Also had 2 merit's, one of which was running 195bhp on Webers and cams.

Ive had both P1 Astra Gsi XE (coilpack engine) and a Corsa B XE (coilpack engine). Both healthy motors and the Corsa was alot quicker.Revs faster.
A Corsa B with an XE is on par with the Mk2 Gte 16v as they weigh around the same.
Even in Merit spec, the Mk3 Astra is still probably over 100kg heavier.
Coonper
5th October 2011, 11:10
Weight doesnt seem to detract from the 3rd gear pull that you get from any redtop! I'm guessing it's due to the masses of torque they deliver.
Even some of the calibra's with the lower spec 'Low Noise' engines are pretty quick and they weigh nigh-on 1500kg.
Also, the mk3 merit is lighter than a GTE. No power steering, no ABS, no electric window or mirrors, no sunroof etc etc. Then consider that they actually share the same floor pan...
I've had a GTE as well come to think of it, with only 38,000 miles! Lol

not really a fan of corsa b's. my brothers got a 5door 1.2 8valve and its probably the slowest and worst handling car ive ever driven.
i think i just hate the fact how common and basic they are. Absolutely everyone has a corsa b as there first car, and every chav buys a black corsa c. its beyond me tbh
Gabbastard
5th October 2011, 11:18
You can never compare two cars unless they have the exact same engine in both. Guy I knew had a 106 GTi, in factory condition, totally unmodified, that was hugely quicker than anyone elses GTi/VTS, even modded ones.
Gearboxes, tyres, engine health all plays a part, but some engines can be close to blueprinted from factory by chance.

5th October 2011, 11:21
Not a big fan of corsa's if im honest.
Astra GTE however ;)
Nik_L
5th October 2011, 11:28
Mk3 Astra merit weighs around 1100kg, the Mk2 GTE comes in at just over 1000kg. Corsa B with XE just over 1000kg too.
Same floorpan yes, but a bit more weight under the panels etc on the Mk3 for safety etc.
Calibra Turbo weighs in at around 1400kg, and i can agree are heavy ass cars as i used to have 1. Me and my bro tried to push it once and we struggled.lol.The 8v Calibra's are shit slow because of the shitty 115bhp engine in a heavy car.XE's are not too bad. Good thing about the Calibra is it has shit hot aero dynamics which helps alot.
I had an Astra Merit too as my 1st car. 1.4 8v Spi. Mate had a 1.4 Mk2 Astra at the same time for his 1st car, and it pissed all over my mk3.

coonper, is that gte one with bnp number plate?
im sure someone on here from scotland used to own it too, unless they both have same last 3 letters
and imo even a corsa xe is not fast

Yes, thats the one. I rescued it from an old blokes garage local to me who owned it from new, but never drove it after his wife died.
The lad (scott) flew down from Scotland to buy it, then drove it back. Wish i'd never have sold it!
You're right though, redtops aren't fast by todays standards. But when i went from a VTR to an astra redtop i thought i was unbeatable! Lol

Would happily have one again if most of them hadn't rusted to bits!

Shouldn't this really be in the 'progress reports' section? If I'm honest Corsa B's are generally shit, they at least need a C20LET/XE to make them half decent

A 1600 GSI would probably be as quick, if not quicker than you're ABF Ibiza and a 20XE definitely would.

Needs a gsi kit on it and that nice purple colour. Half decent cheap cars. Just abit boring.

The only problem is half of them around here are either chavmobiles with huge alloys or lowered on their arse on standard shocks so bounce around!
There is one that i swear has a c20let, its fucking rapid!
