View Full Version : One for the Track-dayers, looking for a cheap track car, Now found one :)

As title says really.
My friend and i were discussing this last night , and we have decided to go in search of a cheap track only car, something that is cheap(ish), lightweight, easy to work with and so on.
Had a few suggestions off others such as Astra (Redtops), Corsa B, vts, 205 etc etc..
Narrowed it down to 3 possibles.
VTS
Corsa B
Metro
Now the one that is appealing to me is the Metty purely because of the cheapness of it lol.
So any thoughts off anyone with experience would be great, looking to do some Track day's next year, so want to get some practice in before i take the GTR out on track lol.
Also if anyone knows of any decent tracks for a Beginner then please feel free to suggest some.
Ta.

Pic the vts mate it's miles quicker and handles well without really doing much. Not much point going round a track in a 2hp metro. You wouldn't enjoy it. The corsa's r quick if they gota red top in but I wudnt show it a corner with all that weight at the front.

vts/gti are slow on track with out spending bigggg money.
metro is a metro don't know alot about them,
corsa b are ok like said above if you have a xe or let. you would need coilovers to sort any handling issues.

Id pick the VTS because I know them inside out so if I had any problems with it id be able to sort it out easy enough and cheaply too.
Parts and mods are cheap and easily available.

Out of the 3, I would have the VTS.
What about a stripped out E36?

Astra Redtop would be my choice.
Pick up a mint 1.4 merit for about £300, get a redtop for about £200.
Get some big block hubs and shafts (astra TD, GSI, sport, cavvy, calibra etc) and bolt it all in. 6 wires that are colour to colour and you're away.
Dead simple, reliable engines, in a great handling, stiff shell.
Then stick the redtop on webers, get some reground cams from autosprint, SBD manifold and you're saying hello to 200bhp.
Handling wise, Bilstein shocks (£200 a set), apex springs, saab 93 ARB, 288mm calipers off a calibra/cavvy turbo with 4 stud Meriva discs.
Here's one i made eariler...

Wont be easy to find a metro thats not full of rust?
They can be made to stop and go well as nearly all the tuning parts from an old skool mini will fit if you get a pre k series car.
If its a k series then the mg f engine fits in!

An MR2 would also be a good shout for a cheap track car. 178bhp, mid engine, RWD, cheap to buy, easy to work on etc.
Put some sticky tyres on it and for £500 you've got a force to be wreckoned with!
This'll give you the RWD appreciation that you might need, before hitting the track in the liner?

I don't see that many E36s at trackdays either...
From that selection, i'd say Saxo, it's faster than the other two (without dropping a VVT lump in the Metro, or a C20 in the Corsa), and it handles better.

Vts, wouldn't have a corsa b with a redtop in it, don't care what people say about coilys sticking a big heavy engine in the front of a light little car is obviously going to make the handling questionable... plus a cammed and stripped vts will still give one difficulty's.

Majority on e36coupe actully regaurd the 328 as a better "trackday" car as with a total build cost of 3k incudling buying the car and the fact the parts dont carry M tax make them a lot cheaper meaning more track time.
And a properly fettled 328 will pass a oem e36 m3 and chase a oem e46 m3.

Look a avonbar they do alot of k series tuning parts.
Also get rid of the plastic tb if it hasnt being changdalready, they have being known to melt / deform in use and jam open.
A few companies do a larger straight swap metal item.
Uprating the suspension isnt that easy, it runs hydrolastic spheres with fluid in them, alot of people just alter the fluid pressure but this isnt correct.
To do it properly you need to drain the system and machine down the inner rods and can alter the number of washers.
To stiffen the rear up you used to get clamps to fit two anti roll bars togeather.
Had a white mg with the turbo body blended in, smoothd phs 2 bumpers, relocated arial and black turbo interior for a 1st car.
Engine was blue printd and based on a late fuel injectd cooper s engine convertd back to carbs, janspeed 4 2 1 manifold etc awsome car

500 quid is cheap for a GTi SE these days - they only made a couple of runs of them in 1991/2. I've owned two and paid more than you did 5 years ago and the cars have gone up in value since then!
Cheapest track toy out there I reckon. The gti's are pretty fun as standard, put in a PG1 gearbox with LSD and the 1.8 vvc (160 or 143 from an MGF/ZR) and you'll have a very competant track car.
Lowering is nearly free, you can uprate the hydragas with individualisation valves to run a higher pressure.
Get yourself over to metropower.org.uk if you havent already buddy, they look pretty nice when done properly. This is the one I built a few years ago:

You can use the 1.8 K-series turbo from a rover 75, came with stronger pistons, rods etc. However youll need an aftermarket ECU but thats par for the course. Theres a guy on metropower whos currently running a turbo'd 1.4 thats had forged pistons, rods and steel crank and I think its making over 300 bhp iirc

So bins from what I've read of the spec of your car you seem to keep telling me is you have a turbo, slicks and 800kg...
No gold star I'm affraid for beating a 328 with at least 1100kg and road Tyres.

Depending on the track, a Saxo will be a good choice. On more twisty tracks rather than ones with balls out straights, the light weight will make it so chuckable itll keep most of it speed through the corners. Mate of mine took his AX to an RS owners day and hardly anything kept up with him because it held its speed the whole way round.
Given the price youd pay for a VTS nowadays, the reliability of them if treated sensibly, and the cheapness or parts, they shouldnt be overlooked just because theyre "chavvy".
Saxp post talking up a Saxo? Now theres a surprise.

thing about track is that you get to speak with the other drivers, and if they say "i couldnt keep up" well i guess they couldn't.
Gibbo, i have made three responses to your bullshit e36 rants about how good bimmers are around a track. as soon as someone points out to you that they aren't all that, with not opinion, but a fact from the views of the bmw owner, you go all defensive. fuck off with your e36 bullshit and find a bimmer crowd to measure cocks with. e36's are outdated, cheap and slow, pretty much sums your crap up.

E36 BMW's make very good trackday cars given the right suspension. I'd say a good kit transforms the car and makes it far more capable on corners. I certainly loved my old one.

N/A Saxo's/106's/205's etc are utter balls around Knockhill.
The back straight fucks them up, and if it dosn't, then the uphill pit straight destroys them.
I always have and always will say that you need some decent torque for Knockhill to put in some quick times. If not then the ground you make up on the corners, is soon lost on the straights.
Not saying you can't have fun etc, but very rarely do you see an N/A car stand out from the pack.
Saying that, last time i was up, there was a P1 172 putting in some quick times. Was pulling lenghts on EK9's etc.

Must of been a shit driver in the ek9 then LOL
Unless it was modified alot..........

even an e46 is a handful around track, such a shame to strip a nice car - they are more at home on the motorway.
Same goes for an evo e36, not the wisest choice, hence the majority will be the likes of 328, cheap to buy and well built though a little lardy but still under powered and expensive to mod.

Well apparently you bins, maybe you spent too much time with your head in the ax's engine bay whacking off over your tea cup of a turbo.

Dont think you can talk about the metro's safety Kam when youve driven 205's let alone in anger when i first opened a 205 door i actully laughed :P
Got the scars to prove you can walk away from a big accident in a 205. Even then they are not that great. You wont get me in a rover metro though thats driven at high speed. I've seen the results when it goes wrong. Used to be a time when half the local young driver deaths were in these cars.
