I'd say it all depends on what type of journey/roads. I get really poor mpg from my VTR as I'm doing short 2-3 mile trips to work every day, all through town. I find it to be fairly economical on longer motorway journeys though.

vtr's arent too bad, mine is even better with the turbo then it was before if you drive it off boost, plant your foot and it can guzzle though :(
no idea on miles tbf, the price of fuel goes up that much its hard to track :fcuk:

Full tank for a MK2 vtr is 45 litres, I get about 300-400. 300 if I've been driving like a cock. 400 is motorway driving at 70 with a burst of 120 here and there..

My VTR get's 120-160 mile's from £20. 120 being fun miles 160 being 70mph motorway miles.
Full system/induction/1.1 gearbox so they won't be helping!

if you want to do 200 miles to 20 quid, youre looking at 57mpg. I somehow doubt youre going to get that from a Saxo unless its a diesel.

My partner drove from plymouth to newport (wales) and back last week, all on £40 which was 270 miles all round, bearing in mind he had a engine in the boot for 135 of the miles :y:

Which works out to roughly 41mpg, which still wouldn't last him a weeks travel to work ;)

£20 is about half a tank around here if you're on the light, so about 180ish? 1.1 used to do 200miles to half a tank

250miles will be easy bud , I wanted to know the answer to this question myself so I filled up 20 pound and I got 155 miles and could probes do 5 more and that was in my furio with a de-catted exhaust and enclosed induction and mixed driving and only not going over 2.5k revs for the last 20miles
Furio-Gazza
23rd October 2011, 20:50
what is the best rev's to change gear to save fuel at is it 2.5k rev's?

LSOfreak
23rd October 2011, 22:46
i remember reading in the saxo manual that its best to change gear at 2.5k i think
my vtr gets shit fuel economy around town, about 250miles on £50 lol
if you stick to 60mph on the motorway you can get epic mpg though lol
ed-bradley
23rd October 2011, 22:48
I can drive about perfectly fine, changing gear around 2.2k.
I can get 100 miles give or take a few from £10 in the 1.1..thats with a duff engine aswell.
If you've got a heavy foot, or have bad driving habits then you'll never get decent mpg.
I try not to brake where I can, and leave a bit of distance so I can roll to a stop or keep rolling.

what is the best rev's to change gear to save fuel at is it 2.5k rev's?
Accelerating & Torque
Torque is the pulling force you observe when accelerating i.e. when you're pushed into your seat. And, as you'll probably feel, this force varies throughout the engine rev range.
It is also a nice, if very rough, indication of where an engine is at it's highest efficiency. As a rough rule, where the engine develops peak torque the engine will be at its most efficient. Therefore attempt to maintain your revs around your peak torque figure when accelerating up through the gears - the exception is the VTS/GTi engine (1.6 16v) where the peak torque figure is stupidly high in the rev range and not really a sensible figure to reach for gradual acceleration routines - for VTS/GTi owners, aim for shifts around 3000-3500 rpm
Peak Torque:
1.0 – 3600rpm
1.1 – 3800rpm
1.4 – 3400rpm
1.5D – 2250rpm
1.6 – 3000rpm (Mk1)
1.6 – 3500rpm (Mk2)
1.6 16v – 5200rpm
Cruising
When cruising, for instance in 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70 mph limits, it's to be the highest possible gear without labouring the engine i.e. making it judder or generally straining it. On level roads 30mph in 5th shouldn't be a problem, if it's an uphill stretch of road you may need to downshift to 4th or even 3rd to main speed without labouring the engine - so choose your gear accordingly. If you're accelerating up to next speed limit, say when exiting a town/residential area, again try to VERY slowly increase the speed (which again should be achievable in 5th for most) to achieve best mpg.
Decelerating
When decelerating, avoid using the brakes, instead allow the car to slow naturally by using engine braking. This method is MORE efficient than taking the car out of gear and coasting - please be aware of this, additionally it's also potentially dangerous. During coasting, fuel is still injected into the engine to keep the engine idling. Whereas when the car is left in gear the momentum of the car maintains the engine revs and therefore far less fuel is used. NOTE, Saxo’s still inject some fuel into the engine under engine braking, unlike modern engine where virtually no fuel is injected.

1.4 furio from nantwich to chester business park 4 times there and back so a total of 24 miles x 8 gives your 192 for £20.00 love ya rachel (my furio's name lol)

I did a run from Oxford to Wigan, in a 3 plug vtr. I put in 25 quid at 135.9 a litre, and did 210 miles before it went on the light, works out at 51.9 mpg. Its not completely accurate though as there was a bit of fuel already in the car(just above coming on the light). But i kept it at about 65 all the way back and feathered the accelerator. Think these more modern vtr engines are much better for economy.

cheaper fuel, thats coz your not far from the stanlow refinery lol
they are normally a crap around the doors on short journeys, i always found mine to be exceptional on a motorway drive, was shocked if i did a mega long journey, mpg return was amazing.
never been out in the sax's for a while :(

im sure the last time i drove the vts with a full tank of fuel i got under 250miles, but that was the way i drive lol
if you keep them below 4k and just stick to 70 you will get decent mpg returns, smooth steady driving is the key, once you start putting open filters and exhausts on, you cant help but make the loud noise and that dents the wallet lol
