View Full Version : Running without lambda sensor

What would happen if I drove my car around without a lambda sensor with a decat? My lambda sensor came out whilst driving. performance became really crappy aswell as the exhaust being extremely loud. After a couple of miles driving with a hole in the manifold the car cut out. Engine made an odd clunky sound and kind of bogged before coming to a stop. Anyone have any ideas?

get a new sensor or plank the hole at speed racing sell the blanks

Sorry I didn't make myself clear enough. I meant is there any sort of serious damage that could be caused to my engine? Would you say it's definitely the reason it cut out?

plenty of people run theres with no sensor

also when you say sensor came out do you mean its unplugged or has it come out of the exhaust because if it fell out the zorst you will have a huge hole because if theres a hole in the mani it will run shit hence the reason why people but a blanking m8 nut in

Thanks for the responses everyone. I know they run fine blanked off. I'm wondering what could happen if you run it without anything at all(no blanking plate or lambda) as my lambda fell out so just want to know the extent of the damage done to my car after driving a couple of miles with a hole in my manifold, as it did cut out

plug the lambda take off with a bung, you can get them most places, just a standard o2 sensor bung, threaded, nip it up.
them a lamdba sleeve, fit the lambda to that and jobs a good un, it needs to read clean air to stop the ecu light coming on, as it will be in a sleeve, it will be clean air, make sure its tied up out of the way, as they run uber hot lol

Mine ran fine without lambda in, did notice a vast increase in fuel consumption tho, also my ecu light didn't come on either (single plug mk1 silvertop btw)

If the engine is standard-ish why would you want to do it? after all it is there to help adjust the fuelling, but the ECU should resort to default values. I had to unplug mine the once though and didnt get an ECU light coming on

So running it without would just cause increased fuel consumption?

I didn't have them plugged in at all for 10's of thousands..

Before mods I getting 80-100 miles from 10 litres

After mods I was getting 60-80 miles from 10 litres

(full system/induction/1.1 gearbox/no lambda's plugged in)

So quite a difference, but much more fun with the mod's :)

No damage can be done, I run without them :)

Just plug the hole lol.

But... why run without when it's better with?

I have same question?! Lambda is cheap...

I think i get it now... the mods were throwing the lambda off so you removed it to sort out the idle issue?

Had mine unplugged to stop it dying once, ran it for a mile without one in and it soundes like a truck lol

LOL if you actually took it out of the exhaust and not just unclipped it from the wiring?? :)

Why is it that people run them without the lambda ?

maybe the same reason people bump 11 month old threads??
