Hi all,

I've just had the low oil level warning light flash at me, I know I should drain all oil out and start again but I don't have time now for about a week!

Is it ok to put in 5w30 but I have no idea what is in there at the moment!?

Cheers

Sam

P.s bit of a noob question I know!!

best bet is to drain all your existing oil then put on a new oil filter (£4 ish at a motor factors) and completly refill with new

Quite clearly going to do more harm by not topping the oil up.

Rather than leaving it low on oil for a week, whack it in mate, oils oil. It'll lubricate your parts.. that's all it needs to do.

Then do a oil drop next week when you have time.

Agree, what would you rather have low oil(engine wear)or correct oil level?:drink:

i ment mix oils but as said its better than no oil. an oil change takes less than 30 mins so surely you could do it after work one evening.

I`m not on about putting gallons of oil in the engine mate, just to top up in the short term ie a few days then change the oil.:drink:

Oil isn't oil . some is recycled and some is about as good as cooking oil. Double Ester oil is what i use.

Very little or no harm in mixing oils, obviously dont do it if you have a choice. Just dont mix 2 and 4 stroke.

when my rocker bolt snapped i went through a good gallon or two of oil. didnt know what was in there, was too busy at the time to do a full change, so topped it up every other day.

it did, of course, get a proper change eventually

Why not? If its of the same grade and specification I dont see the harm in it

Theres no harm in mixing grades either :y: obviously better to maintain the same grades if you have the choice.

Its all swings and roundabouts there really, I wouldnt want to mix up 50/50 a heavy turbo diesel oil with a light fully synth oil but a little splash to top up is no bother. Especially on the workhorse 8v TU!

Btw, also check OilMans posts on this subject as I guess hes a more trustworthy source. Also stating mixing is ok, mineral with synthetic etc
