Hmm, quite possible but not mechanicly minded, had the car a week or two and the dash lights now don't work and the engine management lights come on! LOL
Don't want to tempt fate anymore! :homme:

Ring up a few local garages and get a price , once you've got the best price from a reputable garage go for itv, failing that buy a full service kit and a Haynes manual and get dirty :D

Hmm sure it would be a good way to learn, but knowing me I will have oil poisoning by next week :)

Oil Poisoning? You don't drink it!
Haynes Manual FTW.
Pick them up for £10 at the very most.

You will be fine mate , I think it's good to have a basic knowledge of the engine and how to do certain jobs when the occasiOn arises , also don't think you will get oil poisoning , maybe dermatitis , get some rubber gloves if your really worried

Oil out first mate.
As said above, oil and filter, air filter, spark plugs, coolant, check wheels for play in the bearing, check ball joints, give everything a good check over (like bushes etc), serpentine belt, more than likely (if youve done more than 80k i think it is on a saxo) your cam belt should be changed. Id put an oil flush through her if you dont htink shes been serviced or if the oils duttyyy as fuck. Maybe some fuel cleaner, check your wiper blades, screen wash, lights, check for oil leaks (rocker cover gaskets are a fucker for this) and Box oil.
Basically, get a haynes manual if you dont know shit about cars if not pay a garage or mechanic, id offer for you but your farrrr away!
A proper service will do your car wonders, but not your wallet if your not mechanically minded im afraid!

I would strongly disagree.
All that old carbonated oil is nice and snug around your piston rings. Its plugged any leakes that you may have and is nice and sludgy around the valve seals.
If you add a detergent and clean all this out, you may cause your self some problem's.
My previous car had very litter service history. I ran it for 500 miles a time on Halfords cheap oil. I kept changing the oil and filter for a good 2000 miles. It cleaned the surface carbon off the parts but did deeply penetrate any gunk on the rings/ valves. When i was happy, i filled her up with a new filter with some premium oil. (You get what you pay for with oil)
If your really anal, send your injectors off to be cleaned.

Theres alot more involved in a service than just the parts, id say on a full service the parts make up for about 30% of the work. full 60,000 mile service sheet for a saxo is 3 sides of A4 checklist

dependant on milage I see your cars a mark 1 1.1, I'd recommend changing the HT leads too. 30 Second job, unplug old ones, and replace with new ones! As for servicing it, get a haynes and give it a go. I did! The engine is simple enough to work on and the manual is very good. Also you have these lovely people on stand by to help if your stuck :)
Oh and if you don't know when it was last serviced I'd run some cheaper oil through it for a few hundred miles to give the engine a good rinse out and then replace the oil filter and oil again, sounds a bit anal but the car shoud love you for it.
but just for my two cents Id say:
Air filter
Fuel Filter
Oil filter
Oil (doing what I said above)
BRAKE FLUID (it absorbs water as it gets older and looses effiency so make sure you do that!
Spark Plugs
HT leads
Coolant systm flush
Dependant on milage you may also need a timing belt kit and water pump renewal but I'd leave that one to a garage if your not 100% as thats the hardest job of the lot listed. The rest is very much do-able with a manual.

gearbox oil is not technically a service item, as back when I used to mess with metros a fe years ago an ex Rover engineer told me the R65/MA box (same box as the saxo) is a sealed for life unit! God knows how they get to that conclusion frankly but luckily they do provide drain points however so its worth doing any way

ht leaads wtf you only change them if you need to.
tbf if your not mechanically minded them all you'll be able to do is the filters oil, and plugs.
as for checking the componants then yes most is common sense but even some may not be as 'worn' as you may think.
i'm a mechanic by trade and on my own cars i just do filter and fluid service but even so the coolant only gets changed every 2yrs, brake fluid every 3 yrs unless specified by manufactures. but saying that i service every 6 months and only do 3.5k a year lol.
but if its not been done in a while if i were you get everything done.
i'm suprised its not froze it's self with the cold weather as the blue antifreeze is only 2 year life :S get that done but change it for 'pink' as thats 5 year long life stuff :).
while your at it like people has said change the brake fluid. but be carefull you don't snap the bleed nipples.
change the gearbox oil aswell as it might not have enough in it :S
give the coolant system a flush through simple thing to do just poke a hose through untill the water runs clean :P

i give a discount to sax p members and i dont pay to advertise on here
lot of people on here will offer to do it and make out there a proper garage bondi but most dont have any real qualifications or any sort of comeback if anything happens
thats why a proper garage tens to be a little more expensive as for them its a living, not just something there playing at
