Assuming everything is timed and tensioned correctly, why is this bad?

Well, the gear box would be on the other side the exhaust manifold wouldn't be the correct way and the engine mounts would be different.

That's just a random thought btw. ;-)

Yes - turning the engine over on the crank anti-clockwise.

possibilty of cam timing jumping would be my worry as tension would be on wrong side of the belt

Yes, I think that's what's happened. I turned it anti-clockwise (just a couple of teeth at the most I think) and I think the timing is out now.

I just don't understand how it would jump when it's all tensioned - being as it is not an auto-adjusting tensioner.

Because when the belt is fitted you make sure its taut on the non-tension side, the belt will stay taut until you turn it the wrong way it'll get slack.

As already said its because the tension is on the wrong side of the belt. If the plugs were removed you arn't cranking against compression so you would get away with it. Still not a good idea though!.

You tension it on one side which meams turning it back slackens n course it to jump
